Where do people buy cedar planks to grill salmon? Besides

have seen them in seafood section of many grocery stores, though don't see why you couldn't

use planks from home depot and the like as long as they're not treated - might be cheaper there, too. bet they'll have some specifically for cooking near their bbq section.

Miain...

mine were bought from a deli in West Palm Beach begining with a C...Carducci or something like that....and the others were bought in Canada...all untreated and came 3 in a pack.....When ever anyone (or I)go to the States, I ask for these planks...they are not that easy to come across...I could never find them at the Home Depots in Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Hudson, Home Depots...(areas, apart from WPB, I generally frequent)....if you have a good deli type store nearby, ask them.

yes, I have been told (and read several times also) that cedar in stores like Home Depot is fine to

cut up and use for grilling. Apparently cedar sold as lumber is not treated with anything, so just sanding down the side you put the food on is adequate for cooking. I have done it several times and it was great.

I just saw them in Publix on a shelf above one of those low refrigerated bins that usually holds

frozen meatballs, prepared frozen chicken cutlets, etc... Not the stand up freezers, but the ones that are usually in that department that you have to lean over into. They were next to lots of other marinades and rubs. They even had 2 sizes. Planks, and squares. I bought mine a few years ago over the interent, so I was SURPRISED to see them in my local Publix, although it is a new store.

Cedar is a naturally preserved and insect-proof wood

that's the way it grows and the reason it has been so prized as a wood for closets and the like for centuries. It's durability is renowned. Therefore, it doesn't need to be treated with chemicals to prevent rotting and/or insect damage. But always ask at the lumber yard, surely someone has dreamed up a way to apply more chemicals to our life by treating cedar.

Our Home Depot does not carry cedar planks ...

(The kind man offered to find me some cedar furniture -- but I really didn't want to dismantle furniture to grill). I'll check local lumberyards. Thanks!

sounds like the planks aren't as plentiful in the states as they are up here. you might have to ask

for some cedar siding or something at a DIY place and maybe they'd chop it into whatever lengths you want.

the vertical steaks are pushed into the ground. I'm not sure if the horizontal cedar planks...

are nailed into the verticals or not but the salmon is placed between the verticals on each steak and then the steaks are tied to hold the two of them together.

there's a Pow Wow this weekend. if I get over there I'll pay close attention and report back. the first time I saw them being cooked like this, is blew me away. kinda like stepping back in time a few hundred years.
