Who gets a CSA box? Do you like it? Too much food? Weird food? There's a Groupon and I'm tempted...

What can you tell me about them? I'm wondering if it's cheaper or more expensive than going to WF or the like. Or too much stuff given it's only me. If I buy spinach every week, can I just get that in my box or do you only get what you get? How does it work?

If you are low carbing/green smoothieing can you cut out corn, taters and the like, to get greens?

This is the company in case anyone has used them:

Farm Fresh to You < this is a link

This place delivers right to your door vs going to a pick-up point. All organic. The price is good ($15) but must become subscriber at the reg price - smallest is $25, reg is $31.

What can you tell me about CSAs?

In my experience, the CSA set's the week's selection. But...

in that site's FAQ, they note that you can request a substitute if you hate, for example, chard. They also note: "Contents for your upcoming delivery are posted on our website on Thursdays at noon for following week's deliveries."

I imagine it's a lot for one person, but they should be able to estimate a rough weight--I can't log into that part since I have no Bay Area zip.

If it's any help, I spend a lot more than $25 on produce and fruit a week at WF, for comparison's sake. (In my defense, we eat a lot of produce and fruit, and WF is the closest market for that, and I schlep it all back by foot.) smileys/wink.gif

One last slightly ominous note: I would make sure there's a way of receiving a refund for any unused/unfulfilled part of a subscription. Plenty of small businesses (I'm thinking mostly of restaurants) who use Groupon take a serious financial hit from the arrangement, which can really affect how they operate in the post-Groupon fulfillment period.

I have done it in the winter when the Farmer's Markets are not open

You get what is in season and what they are growing. Usually they share produce with neighboring farms to ensure you have a well rounded delivery. I looked on the website and they have a very good explanation, on "How It Works".
Each CSA is a little different. I enjoyed what I got in my box. Sometimes you get things you have never tried, it is fun to learn about new foods and ways to cook with or use them.
Try it, you can always stop after a month or two, if it is not your liking.
