Who has a favorite Chinese restaurant in San Francisco? Thanks!

Are you interested in dim sum?

There is an excellent Chinese restaurant near the Ferry Terminal Market which specilalizes in dim sum. Its name escapes me at the moment, but it is about two blocks away in a mall across the street north from a post office building. Probably one of the locals can provide the name.

And if you go to the market on Saturday, be sure to look for the Rancho Gordo stand which sells among other things dried beans--Steve's white runner cannelini beans are the best I have ever cooked.

Mark, are you talking about this place???

Another good choice is Slanted Door, it's Vietnamese though, not Chinese. But it's a very good place to go, if you can get in! It's in the ferry bldg which I highly recommend you go.
Also in the ferry bldg is Hog Island Oyster company. We usually take the ferry over, start with oysters and their excellent grilled cheese, then to Slanted Door and get whatever looks good, then over to Yank Sing to get bbq pork buns!

Mark, i think the restaurant you are talking about has closed. but for other dim sum recs.

I would recommend Gold Mountain in Chinatown in SF, or Koi Palace in Daly City for dim sum. Koi Palace is great for Chinese seafood, it can get pricey, and there is a very long wait for dim sum. San Tung is a good one, great chinese chicken wings, dumplings, noodles, sting beans, etc. (it's a chinese/korean restaurant )R & G is also a great chinese restaurant in Chinatown -their beef is well known as well as their salt and pepper squid. If you like Chinese desserts, try Golden Gate Bakery. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any more questions or need other suggestions on restaurants in SF.

Yank Sing does dim sum but not sure about dinner, it's great though, Tommy Toys does a good dinner

and it's kinda upscale, downtown near the Transamerica Pyramid. There's a hole in the wall that I like called the R&G Lounge on Kearny, I'm usually the only non-asian in there. Also there's a soupdumpling place out on Balboa near the beach but again that's a day spot and I can't remember the name...

Slanted Door in the Ferry Building is really wonderful. You need reservations and it takes a bit to get them. Their quaking beef salad is amazing and so is their coconut tapioca pudding with mango (it's seasonal).

There's another wonderful Chinese place out on Geary near 25th or something, I go past it all the time, it's packed with people and weddings and parties and always full, great seafood. I'll try to remember it, right now I'm out of town otherwise I'd get on the bus for you and get the name, and some takeout!

The places I love are not touristy - we're typically the only non-locals

My husband's cousins lived out there forever until one passed away and then the other finally moved to the east coast a few years ago so they took us to all the local spots.

MUST GO - Now this is a little touristy but it's so fun and such a find you have to go - Sam Wo's - it's been around ove 100 years. Cheap food, unique atmosphere and attitude unlike you've ever seen but it's a must. Besides - a plate of noodles is less than $5 so even if you just stop for a snack - do it. 813 Washington - very narrow place, enter through the kitchen and go upstairs to eat. Open until 3 am or later.

Mon Kiang - Hakka Cuisine absolutely our favorite place! 683 Broadway

MeeMee Bakery - yummy walnut slices, almond cookies and of course, tons of fortune cookies. 1328 Stockton

Golden Gate Bakery - Okay so they have a line - it's worth it! Get the custard 'tarts' especially if they are still warm from the oven! 1029 Grant Ave

Pearl City at 641 Jackson for dim sum - we were the only non-Asians. Five of us ate and ate and ate for $25.

Not Asian but our favorite breakfast spot - Pergamino's at 1323 Columbus

As for seafood - Scoma's - it's tucked back in behind the other restaurants at the Pier - they started as a supplier and looks out over the bay. Very quaint. Love this place! #47 Pier - it's sort of back in by where the old masted ships are. Have a foglifter (but beware, it will put the fog on you!)

Sabella & LaTorre is our other favorite - #3 Fisherman's Wharf. Good clam chowder and great sand dabs which is what I ALWAYS order here.

Tadisch Grill is the oldest continuously run restaurants in SF and while it's not the best seafood in town, it's good, it's got character and worth a visit. 240 California

Pull up to Swan Oyster Bar for fresh crab and oysters! 1517 Polk

Yes, Susan, Yank Sing is the one I remember, and it is dim sum...

SInce we had dim sum I can say whether they offer plated Chinese dishes, but their dim sum is worth a visit. We have also been to Slanted Door. The rest of our last trip we were in Sonoma (General's Daughter) and East Bay (Oliveto).
