why did my onions turn green?

I was sauteing some grated onion the other night and they turned green. I continued with my recipe, a quick tomato sauce that I use on pizza, and it tasted fine. It was an average grocery store cooking onion in a stainless pan with unsalted butter.

OMG - That used to happen to me when I lived in FL. I could never figure out why!
