I finally stopped the constant cough about a week or so ago (constant since June) but I have an appointment with a pulmonologist on Sept 18th. I was going to cancel, but now I think I'll go and see if it's an allergy thing.

Wow..wigs...your husband must have been miserable! I know I was miserable...and weak...and sleepy all the time...and cranky because I was sleepy all the time.

Maria, I am aware of the prior conversation on this coughing subject

so without going back and trying to locate it, I will tell you what happened to me. I started coughing, thought it was the beginning of allergy season, so thought nothing of it. The coughing persisted, got worse, I could not sleep at night, and I put up with it for 8 months, until it got so severe that I could not handle it anymore. All this time, I felt fine, not congested, just tired. I traced it back to starting about the same time my hypertension medication was changed. I looked it up and found out a side effect was a cough. I went to my Doctor and was told "oh yes, we call that the Ace cough:. Apparently, I cannot take Ace inhibitors. She changed my medication and within two weeks, I had stopped coughing.

Mine was pneumonia that went south into they know not what...

(I wasn't on any new meds) I also got a scope and one dr thinks some of it could be from acid reflux (with no other symptoms). I no longer have much of a cough, but I have damage to one lung.

GERD - a cough after eating and or drinking

I had a cough that I could not shake after a cold several years ago. Acid reflux. I was stunned by the diagnosis. I put myself on subsequent 2-week trials of OTC reflux meds starting with Mylanta, then Ranitidine (Zantac), and then Omeprazole (Prilosec). They did not make the cough go away but it became clear that the cough worsened after eating/drinking. I had gained a few pounds so I went about losing the weight, upped my yogurt and acidophilus intake and after a month of added bacteria, the cough went away. My neighbor developed laryngitis after a cold that she couldn't shake. Acid reflux. She went on prescription meds and still takes them several years later. I have had 2 more cough cycles after Fall colds since the diagnosis - in one now. The GERD is not cured but I am trying to manage it with lifestyle changes.

GERD, oh yes... I had that a few years ago, and realized it

was the cause of my hoarseness! I didn't have it too long, or would've gone to the doctor's about it.

I also realized the acid reflux was worse at night, after lying down, and it WENT AWAY after I stopped drinking cola products. Diet or sugar, it didn't matter.

I still get it occasionally if I drink lemonade/limeade at night, before lying down. But to have had it so bad that it affected my vocal cords, that's kinda scary!

Feel better, Marilyn (and other acid reflux sufferers)!

Yes, Paul was awfully miserable. I called every day 2 chk on his seeing dual specialist earlier than

the scheduled appt, but no dice so we waited. Dr. Baker is excellent--he appropriately diagnosed and got Paul on the correct inhaler meds at the very first visit. After allergy testing, Dr B later prescribed anti-allergy meds.
Of course, now Paul is having trouble w/ his anti-allergy medications(!)--he began sneezing & having a very runny nose about 3 months after starting those so he's quit them (after verifying they were indeed side effects of his particular type of anti-allergy pills & after notifying Dr. Baker). As a result, my DH is not totally in the clear yet, BUT his awful coughing abated right off the bat once he was on the proper inhaler. For that, we will both be eternally grateful. You are so right, Marilyn--it is a real bummer 2 cough a lot 4 weeks & months straight.
I am elated to read that your cough has ceased, and maybe U'll find out something that can prevent its happening again after your specialist appointment. Good luck!
