Will someone please explain NYTimes recipe situation? I get that they want you to pay and subscribe

to pull up recipes from the archives, but I'm reading today's paper and I STILL can't get to the recipe. It's like posting a banner headline of ALIENS INVADE EARTH! And then when you click on the link to read about it, it says to subscribe.

Sometimes I can see the recipe. Most times I can't and I haven't figured out the pattern. For sure, the newsletter they send to my email has all kinds of links that won't open unless I pay to subscribe. But why not allow the ones shown in the online version of the newspaper?

By the way, I'm cranky because I was reading about a mango pie using premade ingredients (Keebler crust and Cool Whip) and Alphonso mango puree. Samin decided to make a "from-scratch" version and yet guests seemed to really enjoy the non-scratch version.

I'm not a subscriber, but I can get some of the recipes.

My SIL says that he can get as many as he wants, if after they give him the "subscribe to see more" page, he clears cookies on his browser.
He thinks that they will allow you a few looks then shut you off if you haven't paid.

Personally, I think that what they are asking for the subscription is way over the top, so it's a no-go here.

I have a teacher's digital subscription, and for quite a while I had access to all the recipes.

Then suddenly, I didn't, and they were asking me to pay more for complete access. As DH is no longer working, I wasn't prepared to do that. Like you, I can't see any pattern to what I see and what I don't. I have also lost access to my NYT recipe folder. smileys/frown.gif

I lean on a friend who has a subs'n to relieive that frustration for me. I am also noticing more pop

ups getting in the way online. You just get rid of one when another one whips right in.

The "pattern" may be that you have clicked on too many articles for the pay period. You

are blocked after that.
We subscribe so if you want a recipe post what it is and I can copy it for you.

Thanks. I know about the 10 *reads* per month. I go in via a daily *free* link

from the library. It's only good for one day, but I would think that one day would allow me to access the current recipes. Unless the ones I'm looking at are NOT daily?

That 10 reads is also "per device" so I can read 10 on my computer, 10 on my ipad and 10 on my phone, should I want to get a microscope out just to read the current book list.

By the way, I'm not begrudging them for asking money for their employees' work, I'd just like to know the limits.

PS: Thank you, Charley for the offer.

That's interesting about the device!! I'd like to read more of WAPO so I amy try

that on there.
And I do think that sometimes the recipes are not new for that day, but I dunno.
Let me know though.
The recipe vault IS pretty neat and you can save recipes from anywhter to it. Good comments and tweaks also.

Access to the recipes by subscription type

Print subscription includes digital and access to the recipes.

Basic digital does not include access to the recipes. With a digital subscription, subscribers must pony up $40/year.

No thanks. All of the recipes can be found free with basic search skills and you can use the $40 for ingredients.

Similar with the crossword puzzle. It is extra, although they say it is included with subscription. I went around and around with them for 2 months parsing the meaning of their online statement about access. According to my interpretation, I should have had access. They said no, I had to pay extra, I then came back and told them they needed to change the language since it states that I have access. No. Yes. I finally gave up. I work as an editor/writer and I know the meaning of words and how they are put together and their statement on crossword access is wrong and misleading.

While I love the Times and know I need to support their labor to produce content, they can be a little grabby sometimes in their eternal quest to boost income from subscribers.

If I go through G I can normally see the recipe, if I switch to Safari so I can copy - nada

I use "Copy Me That" to save recipes, but it doesn't work on my phone via G for the NYT. I have to open in Safari, then I hit the paywall.

I have yet to try going through the library website, but at least it should be viewable that way.

You've tried sticking the link in a private-mode/incognito window, right?

That works for me with a bunch of stuff, but I subscribed to the NYT, so can't check for that. Let me know if you want me to copy and email the recipe!
