Now that the Supreme Court has finally struck down those illegal barriers to inter-state trade that a lot states were using to block wine sales, does anyone have some recommendations for some reliable vendors with nice prices? TIA

I had the most amazing wine last night and I want to buy a case of it. It's La Spinetta's Moscato d'Asti 2004 from the Italian Piedmont. It's like a big old-fashioned damask rose turned to a golden creamy liquid. Wow. This is a really nice dessert wine.

Hi Michael. Are you looking for small vineyards or large wine stores online. I have purchased from

www.wine.com and from www.sherry-lehmann.com (latter is lg. wine store in NYC). Astorwine.com is another NYC wine store that has interesting stuff.

I share your enthusiasm over the new shipping options!

Cheers!

Thanks Hallie, I'm just leary of going on line and picking

someone with the lowest prices for fear of getting into a nightmare. I'll check out those places. I'm getting a price spread of $11-20 on the Moscato d'Asti I'm looking for! The local high-end wine vendors here sell it for $18-20. So even with shipping, the $11 that I found in NY is still a bargain. Thanks.

Wine suppliers

Richard,
I am lucky in that I live in the beautiful Napa Valley. Living where I do I am lucky enough to be able to buy my wine directly from the winery. Usually I find that when you purchase it from the winery as opposed to going through a wine warehouse that you get a better price since there is little markup. I am attaching a link to the Napa Valley Chamber of Commerce. You will find a listing of many of the Napa Valley wineries along with links directly to the winery websites.

If you would prefer a Sonoma wine you could try the Sonoma Chambers website.

If you have any questions about wineries, quality etc. please feel free to let me know. I will help you in any way I can. smileys/smile.gif

Why Jen, thanks so much!

Actually we've been to the Russian River and Sonoma areas several times and bought there (love Quivera and Michel-Schlumberger!--still have a couple cases in the basement). We just love going up there on trips to SF.

I'm specifically shopping for an Italian Piedmont wine from La Spinetta called Moscato d'Asti. I had it last night at a food/wine tasting dinner and it was out of this world.

Thanks for the tips, I'll check them out. Haven't been to Napa yet, maybe next trip.

Napa Valley,

Next time take Hwy 101 to 37 and 37 to 29 to Napa. It is actually not much further than Sonoma from San Fran (20 minutes further East than the town of Sonoma itself). I would recommend that you take Hwy 29 up the Valley to Calistoga then cross over on calistogas main street to Silverado trail and take that down the Valley. Most take either one or the other both directions and miss half of the great wineries. Next time you plan a trip let me know and I will get together a list of wineries that offer good tastings and tours. Most now charge for the tastings and many are pretty expensive. There are still a few that have good wines and fairly inexpensive tastings. There are also some that you can tour their wine caves or tunnels where they store the large barrels. There are also some tasting rooms in downtown Napa that offer a wide selection of local wines that you can taste and purchase.

Another place that you can look into visiting in Copia. Robert Mondavis center for wine food and art. This is located in Downtiown Napa on First street and often they have tastings, art shows, plays, or concerts that are quite good. In the summer they have outdoor movies and concerts that are pretty fun.

Again let me know if you need any local help. smileys/smile.gif

Has Ohio repealed their law (if they had one).

I think the law has to be changed before it can be sent, in spite of the SC's ruling. Don't you have a Trader Joe's--or Jungle Jim? How are they for wines like you may want.

Gretchen, not sure about the legalities...

but every vendor I've placed an order with has shipped, whereas before they wouldn't. Yes I can get this wine locally, but Ohio has high taxes on spirits and I'm looking to buy several cases. Of course I can go across the river to Kentucky, who doesn't have the high taxes that Ohio has, but the suppliers that have it there have what I think is a price I can beat if I order a case from out of state. There's usually reasons to my madness

We enjoyed a great Berliquet at a restaurant and Sherry-Lehman was one of the few places that had

it and could ship a case down to Florida. I like to read the employee's picks on those website too.

You are right about Ohio's high taxes. My home town is

Troy (went to Miami) and I get sticker shock when I buy wine there! I wonder if Total Wine has a website? If you know what you want, you can compare prices.
Recently had a Kermit Lynch Cotes du Rhone that was unbelievably good--much richer than any CDR I have ever had. There's an idea--Kermit Lynch. You can sure trust his picks.
