With all the talk above about pressed duck

and Tour Argent, I was just wondering if anyone here has ever dined at the Blue Train in Paris and what your experience was like. I thought it might be fun to eat there one evening.

Richard, I haven't eaten at the Blue Train myself, but I've peeked and it has an excquisite decor.

Also a great reputation. Jacques' parents used to go there for special occasions. I love those old Paris stations.

Another idea: When we want to indulge in Paris, we go to Le Vaudeville. It's a fun, noisy brasserie with simple but amazingly good food. (except on Sundays, when it's dead because it's in a business district. Try it on a weeknight.) Not cheap, but not a mortgage payment either.

Yes, I know the decor is over the top...

and that's a big reason we want to go there, to do something that seems like a real step back in time. I've seen reviews all over the place for it. Sometimes I think people just love to trash traditional things that some really like just to be a snob. I can't imagine a place like that staying in business this long if they weren't serving some good food in addition to the fin de siecle-gilted grandeur. According to their Web site, a prix fixe dinner with 4 courses, champagne, a bottle of wine, a bottle of mineral water, and coffee in a setting like that in Paris is €84. Sounds like a wonderful evening to remember. But then, I've never eaten there so that's why I'm askin'!

We went in and had a drink in the lounge just to enjoy

the absolutely magnificent decor. I have heard from knowledgeable Francophiles that the food is not as good as it could be.

The Michelin guide reccommends it, though they've never given it a star >>

(It's really hard for brasseries to get a star.) I think that, like the Jules Verne in the Eiffel Tower, it's been criticized in the past for not trying very hard because it didn't have to. But both places have better reputations now.

You're right, people love to hate popular places. Also, Parisians can be a bit jaded being surrounded by such exceptional food all the time. I'm sure I would love it. Let us know how it is.

By the way, did you find a place on Ile Saint-Louis, or was that another trip?

Actually I've found

that most of the sniping about the place was in forums where people seemed to be mouthing off to impress by running things down to "elevate" themselves, as in "we know better." Most of the reviews of people who actually stated they ate there were, for the most part, very postive in what I've read.

That said, we are staying in a private home on Ile St. Louis, so I'm sure our hosts will have their opinions about all of this as well. LOL. I just love that area and it's so conveniently located.

Thanks again.
