Dear Maria, et al

WOW – your package! First I have to say your too generous gift card replaced all my All-Clad pans! Ed & I went to the Wm-Sonoma outlet and I picked out the selection of my dreams. Now whenever I can return to my kitchen I will do so with fond thoughts of each of you – your thoughtfulness, prayers and generosity have helped me through this strange and surreal state of finally being in the place I totally wanted to be, and awakening the next morning on someone’s couch with nothing but a cat, a toothbrush, and some old running shoes.

Maria, the package has solved so many pressing issues! Paperclips! A decent looking folio to meet the insurance man! A sharp knife and a perfect blue plastic cutting board! The incredible array of samples (I am a collector too), even for first aid. I tripped on the sidewalk in front of the convention center where we all hung out starved for information for eleven days. My knees were totally skinned (didn’t destroy my one pair of new jeans) and they didn’t even have a band-aid, much less antibiotic cream.

Trader Joe’s Trail mix!

Fuzzy Socks!

Cat treats for Pushkin. His breath improves with each bite.

So many wonderful, useful things – the spiral notebook to keep track of the bureaucracy that wreaks my state of mind as I wait for hours on hold trying to convince the mortgage company that they have in their possession the full settlement from our insurance for the loan and should release the funds so we can MOVE ON for cryin’ out loud! (insert *deep* breath here)

I wish I could post to everyone but still can’t. My Android lets me in sometimes but reading is difficult and I don’t have much data time. The place where we are staying has a “borrowed” wi-fi from the neighbors, not for me.

I love you all and look forward to getting back in. If things fall apart* – God forbid – I plan to keep my email address.

Thanks again for everything!

Love,

Pat

*referring to problems with eat.at - I don’t plan to fall apart.

I also received a lovely note from Pat today, and here's what she wrote:

"October 6, 2011

Dear Marianne,

We are not settled, and I can't let any more time fly by without thanking you for your gift card and your friendship! We Southern gals do need to stick together. I love the Piney Woods of Alabama(lived in Prattville as a kid for a while). Bastrop is a piney woods area too - guess that's one reason we retired from the Foreign Service here. Bastrop State Park lost 70% of the pines and we lost 1,600 homes. Needless to say, we'll have to relocate, but don't know where.

I want you to know - your gift, along with the card MariaD sent, is now invested in new cookware - my All-Clad is in a sorry state of melted mess. I'm looking forward to using it and thinking of you every time I do! As a foreign service family, my whole life has been about the home - making a comfortable, familiar place no matter where we served. So this is a new assignment - it is just taking a while to get there. Your friendship has helped so much - your card came just a few days after the fire - in some of those darkest moments. Thanks for being there with me. Love Pat."

I want to reach out and hug her neck so bad!
