5Here's the recipe I promised. I don't remember where I got the recipe (possibly the Chicago Tribune), but I've made it for years. It's a great cookie.

Drooste Cracked Chocolate

1 1/4 cups brown sugar

2/3 cups vegetable shortening

1 tablespoon water

1 teaspoon vanilla

2 eggs

1 1/2 cups flour

1/3 cup Drooste cocoa

1/4 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup confectioner's sugar

Preheat oven to 375 degrees

In a large bown, mix brown sugar, shortening, water, and vanilla until well blended. Beat in eggs.

In a medium bowl, combine four, cocoa, soda, salt. Add flour mixture, slowly mixing until blended.

Shape dough into 1 1/4" balls; roll in confectioner's sugar. Place on ongreased cookie sheets, 2" apart.

Bake 7-9 minutes or until cookies are set. Cool for 2 minutes, then remove from sheets and cool further on a rack.

Either that or leave out the confectioner's sugar:) Every time I read "Drooste," I have to laugh -

you realize that it's spelled "Droste," right? smileys/smile.gif
Question: Have you ever made these with butter instead of shortening? - I never use shortening, but don't know if these would work well with butter or not.

Ooops--typo. BAD editor! It's correct on my recipe card.

I have never tried butter--interesting idea. They tend to be rather high, rounded cookies...would butter make them spread more?
