Your input/opinion regarding posting Cooks Illustrated recipes

If I remember correctly some members have mentioned that Cooks Illustrated does not take kindly to having their recipes posted. And I'm wondering how seriously this needs to be taken?

My understanding is that recipes can't be copyrighted (although I could be very wrong here:).

My question arises because I was thinking of posting on my blog a recipe from Cooks Illustrated with, of course, crediting CI as the source. But am I going to be 'in trouble' doing so? My goal is to share great recipes. But not if I'm causing trouble by doing so.

Thanks Deb

As I recall Deb,

CI had problems with bloggers adapting their recipes. I don't think there is a problem with linking their recipes. I am not sure about posting their recipes verbatim and siting them as the source. You might want to either rewrite the directions (that is the part that is copyrighted) or contacting them directly and asking them for permission to use their recipe.

Thank you! This takes care of it for me!

Although I would always give credit - it would never be verbatim. I also add tweaks, shortcuts and commentary:)

I feel so much better now - thank you so much for setting me straight!

Having dabbled, somewhat, into recipe creation, the rule of thumb seems to be you can't claim >

ownership to a list of ingredients but you CAN claim ownership to the specific wording of the preparation instructions.

While that seems daunting, if the instructions were re-stated in a way that meant the same, (ie. "stir with a wooden spoon" re-written as "using a heat-proof spatula, keep the mix moving in the pan") the plagiarism issue would be obviated.

I think they've mellowed. When I received some test recipes, there was a note on

them that said not to post the recipes that were being tested. However, it also said that if you want to share a published recipe, be sure to give them credit. Not exactly those words and I can't find my original post with the exact words here.

Wow! I agree with one of the blogger's reply that she could have not even

mentioned them at all when she posted her version of it, since it was "significantly changed from their version".
