My lime tree birthed a lime…yes, they are yellow

I think I reported when I was so proud that my lime tree birthed, a single lime. Well this year I’ve got about seven or eight on there, and they are all fully ripe right now. I noticed one fell off the tree, so now I really have to decide what to do with it besides some random thing I could’ve used a lemon for (I’ve got hundreds of those). It is a Bearss lime tree, supposedly the Myer lemon of limes. Also, I learned from my sister‘s SoCal tree years ago, that when they are fully ripe, they actually turn yellow. However, I didn’t really realize how much bigger they would be. Look at the size of this guy! it’s like the size of a lemon. (Pardon my nails, I also did some random yard work while putting out trash cans.)

huh...how would you know one from a lemon...if you didn't know?
They do have a bit of a greenish cast to the yellow, and I haven’t cut it, but think it’s more green in there. They do go through a stage that looks exactly like the green in the store, and you might see a yellowish section on them where it’s starting to ripen more. Picking them green will give you exactly what you find in the store, but if you leave them on the tree, they turn yellow. I never pick any of my citrus before I’m ready to use it because the best place to store it and have it last the longest, is on the tree. Also, they smell like lime, not lemon. Of course, the meyer lemons are more fragrant than the traditional Eureka lemons sold in stores.

I’ll take a photo tomorrow in natural light next to a meyer lemon for comparison.

Interesting, looking forward to the taste report. Congrats on growing your own! Maybe make the honey lime butter found in this recipe. people in the comments said they doubled the honey lime butter. Would probably be tasty with shrimp or fish.

need i remind you again!!?? Scotch Frog

(a very BIG frog)

I’ve gotta admit, next to the meyer lemons it kind of just looks like a Eureka lemon. I wonder if that’s why they pick and sell them when they’re smaller and green?
