A friend of mine is attending the famed Dinner in White. What would you pack for a picnic?

what fun! had not heard of this. would not pack anything with marinara or BBQ, HA!

quickly gather baguette, cheese and sausage and roasted veggies from the deli, fruit and some decadent dessert slices. rose or sparkling wine.

Oh wow! Sounds like fun (and a little claustrophobic!)

Maybe white wine ;o), cheese, fruit, bread and/or crackers, sandwiches, etc. Boring but portable and safe.

It was really fun last year, looking forward to it again here in SF this fall!

Seems from the photos the Parisiens did not go overboard on decor like in San Francisco.

We saw people with cupolas, fairy lights, swags of flowers dangling over the tables, lanterns, candelabra and a replica of the GG bridge!

This year we are planning a fun menu, it's still developing:
Shrimp and avocado ceviche
leche de tigre after
Georgian eggplant rolls
rack of lamb (possibly)
another grand cake
more champagne - we didn't bring nearly enough

Wonderful suggestion! I sent her that recipe, and thought salmon might make a nice main.

Heather, I love your write up! Would love to see what some of the other folks did. smileys/smile.gif

Have you a recipe for the cold salmon? I think cold dishes that are excellent is a cook's dream

especially when having company in the summer. I often make a cold asparagus dish for company, and just having one dish that is done and in the fridge, ready to pull out is wonderful. Having an excellent cold salmon to go with it would be great!

I think it's tough to go wrong with poaching salmon. I vary it each time but the sauce

we preferred was just mayo, sour cream and fresh dill. Very simple. Sometimes a bit of Dijon. Occasionally tarragon instead of the dill.

But to poach, I do pretty much like this method. I don't usually use wine as I don't think it's necessary; seems disrespectful to such a beautiful fish. And I use bay laurel instead of thyme.

And of course, I'm revelling in fresh sockeye here. What a delight!!

Oh thanks, I was completely soggy from the fog (and the champagne) lol

It's fun having darker hair too, but the upkeep is hard, since I'm naturally a "dirty" blonde.

I need to shop for white clothes for this year!

We noticed that many of the other guests hired caterers for their parties, most people did not bring their own food like we did.

I think it would be great fun to do a dress up picnic in a park sometime, everyone wear white or pastels or something like that and real glassware and china etc. Sort of like Hyacinth Bucket's Afternoon of Riparian Enjoyment (without the messy dredge bit).

I know sauces are easy, but if you're in a pinch and have the Costco Tzaziki on hand, it's great

I went to Costco here for the first time in maybe 12 years?? Since a year after they opened. I was

thrilled with the huge variety of products they now offer. And the prices are so tempting. I was disappointed, however, to note so many Chinese-origin products. Pine nuts from China! I didn't even think to look at the origin of pine nuts.

I'll look for the tzaziki if I get to go again. thanks Ang.

I'm with you on the China thing. I check everything now. I was so disappointed recently

buying two jars of these delicious sliced peaches at a local supermarket. They were sadly, REALLY TASTY. And disappointed at the duplicitous nature of it but more so in myself because I had been duped! The labeling looked all folksy with an American sounding name and had this paragraph about how they were a family business for over X number of years. They were so good that I wanted to find out more about the farm and maybe visit if they were in CA. Like a lot of Chinese products these days I had been duped by seeing "USA" on the label but on a more detailed inspection it said something like "Distributed by XXX USA" then in another area less prominent on the label, it said "Product of China"
