Years ago, there was a German restaurant in La Jolla called the Bratskeller. We were young and had little money for fine dining so we alwyas ordered the cheapest plate on the menu: a bratwurst, red cabbage, and hot German potato salad
Through a friend working in the kitchen, we got the actual recipes:
Open a can of Durkee's German potato salad and heat. Open a jar of store-bought red cabbage and heat. Grill sausages and serve. And this was in fancy La Jolla!
It's now one of my go-to meals when I have no time to cook, like tonight.
