Anyone around here got teenage kids? Went to a holiday party & hosts kids were around. Astonished to

I still am startled when my phone "chirps" at me that I have a text.

Most of the time, it's spam.

Occasionally, my older daughter will send me one, or someone at work will, if they think they might cajole me into working off hours.

I have a real problem with those who are so important that they must call or text (no clue who might need to know) that they have "just landed/driven/eaten/talked to/didn't talk to" whomever.

Am I the last person on earth who only checks the cell phone once a day to see if anyone called?

(It's my only phone now, having ditched the land line more than a year ago)

I used to get sent to my room, start reading a book & never come out when punishment was over.

Eventually Mom learned that wasn't exactly a punishment since I happily could spend hours reading. smileys/smile.gif

I too was raised that kids should be seen & not heard. I loved sitting around the table w/ adults &

listening to their stories. I would promptly be ejected if I asked questions so I learned to keep quiet.

With kids busy texting, they too are doing the "seen and not heard" bit, but it's a much different thing....

Ah well, I used to get in trouble for talking on the phone so much. Guess it's no different now that the medium has changed.

I like the "no texting" rule. When you gather, you actually spend time w/ each other. Imagine that!

I hear you...Some of you know my friend Crescent Dragonwagon. Her husband was killed in

a cycling accident. (A car hit him on a long distance bike ride.) Before it was illegal to talk on a cell phone in my state (while driving), she refused to talk with me. "Hang up and call me when you're parked!"

I saw John Medina, author of "Brain Rules" speak this fall. He said talking on the cell phone while driving is the equivalent of 4x the legal limit for alcohol consumption.

I sat in a restaurant with a mother/daughter at the next table, both on their cells....

they stayed that way the ENTIRE time we were there - never a word to each other. The kid was about 12 - I felt like shaking them both. Sadly, people wonder why they can't communicate with their kids anymore smileys/frown.gif

We have 1 cell phone between us that we only use in an emergency. Whoever takes the car takes the

cell phone. Our plan gives us 30 minutes a month for $10. Works for us.

Wow! What a cool book to cover for your bookclub group. Now I'm wondering what else ya'll have read!
