Anyone giving anything up for Lent? I am ditching ...

Beer ... red meat ... french fries ... pizza

I have been doing it since I was a kid and actually I look forward to it each year. I seem to be able to drop from five to ten pounds and when its over I do my blood test at the Doc's.

Its for 40 days and 40 nights, minus 1 .. and that would be St. Paddy's Day. I made a pact with you know who!!!!

 
I'm giving up junk food smileys/frown.gif Only snacks allowed are healthy foods (veggies, soy yogurt, etc.)

It's gonna be a looooong 40 days!!!

I love bread--well-made, crusty, fabulous bread. There are three kinds on the counter, at the moment: caraway, walnut-rye, and a baguette.
Guess I will have to enjoy watching my husband eat them all.
Bread disappears here during Pesach/Passover, anyway, so that will offer even more incentive! smileys/smile.gif

 
I'm going to try to give up cussing like pirate when I'm mad...

I do need to watch my mouth better.

 
Snacks.....I gave up coffee a few years back for Lent and never went....

back to drinking it. Feel so much better all the time now. But I also put on weight! Also happened with cigarettes and tea so many years back.

 
I work with someone who is trying to stop drinking that stuff..her trainer says

that Diet Coke is the anti-Christ! hee! Her husband bought her like 20 hrs. with a personal trainer for Christmas.

 
Oh, why did you remind me? Okay, Dove ice cream miniatures, ice cream slightly soft. That's a

sacrifice.

 
Lenten "denials" can be very self serving--giving up

chocolate, drinking, ice cream,etc. It's stuff we make a "thing" about giving up--and usually has a side effect of letting us lose weight, etc. Pretty light stuff.
What about DOING something you don't often do==write your wonderful great aunt a letter.Committing to do some volunteer work. Something that will make a difference to someone else--and maybe after 40 days of Lent-- to yourself.

 
Most definitely! I hope to change my life a bit and offer my sufferings (pain of self-denial) to...

God and pray that denying myself things that I enjoy on a daily basis can help make me spiritually stronger to deny OTHER things that may damage my soul.

I chose two things that will be difficult without being impossible because I want to have a good shot at it!

In the end, I pray God is pleased with my offering and that I may be a bit healthier (a few pounds lighter).

Gretchen, you said exactly what I was thinking I wanted to say....

and your view is a lesson/suggeston I offer to my 6th grade Sunday school students who I think view Lenten fasts as sort of a fad thing. Just something their friends do 'cause it's that time of year again. I don't think many of them really understand the deeper meaning and value of the heart-felt Lenten fast just quite yet. I haven't gotten myself to that point either! (and I don't want to do it just to say I'm doing it.) Now if my students (and I) were all out there sacrificing our time and talents for others...wow. If we cannot "give up", then we can "give to".

 
Great, kpinky! As their teacher you are in a position...

to teach them denying themselves during Lent (like Christ did for 40 days) is not a 'fad' but a beautiful TRADITION that they will become accustomed to doing and hopefully grow into!

It's an admirable practice to do both--give AND give up!
