And there is something to be said for a self-denial that is private between you and God.
Many Christian denominations believe in the spiritual benefits of self-denial and sacrifice. If it's undertaken with that intention -- as it should be -- then there is nothing self-serving about it, it is in fact a way to bring you closer to God. I am a sugar addict; I crave sugar like a smoker craves nicotine. Now that everyone knows, because I posted it here, what I'm giving up, what will be private between me and God is the small way in which I join my suffering to His every time I crave it and deny myself for His sake and the benefit of my soul.
