Just ran across this in my files and had a chuckle.

Popcorn Salad

makes 6 servings

6 c popped popcorn

1/2 c green onion, sliced

1 c celery, diced

3/4-1 c mayo

3/4 c chopped, cooked bacon (reserve some for sprinkling on top)

1 c grated cheese (reserve some for top)

1/2 c sliced water chestnuts

In a bowl, combine popcorn, sliced onion, celery, mayo, bacon, cheese and water chestnuts. Chill. Top with reserved bacon and cheese. Best when used within 3-4 hours.

Oh my goodness, did you ever make it? Probably tastes good or it wouldn't have gotten popular, but

I'd never heard of it.

LOL, never heard of it, but I did consider popcorn an

appropirate dinner "sidedish" when I was in college.

And all those years it could have also been salad!

now I'm thinking Popcorn Salad Balls, on a nice piece of lettuce with a parsley garnish. Reminds

me of the "Crown Roast of Wienies with Sauerkraut Stuffing" I made for a Halloween party one year. Too funny.

googling just makes things worser - Yuck

How do you make popcorn salad, and is it actually a "salad"?
Step 1: Fill a large bowl with popcorn (popped), leaving enough room for tossing.

Step 2: Add 7 oz. of Nacho Cheese Doritos (half a bag) and 7 oz. of Cool Ranch Doritos.

Step 3: Toss

Step 4: Garnish with peanut butter M&M croutons. Plain or Crispy M&M's can be substituted in case of nut allergy.

I have often been asked if popcorn salad can in fact be called a "salad".

The dictionary* defines salad as follows:
1. A dish of green herbs or vegatables, usually with chopped cold meat, fish, etc.
2. The course consisting of such a dish.
However, I have given it considerable thought and have come to the conclusion that since, for example, it is now commonplace to stick unidentifiable bits of dried fruit into jello and call it a "salad", that perhaps the traditional definition of salad is outdated.

How about a salad made with those orange Circus Peanuts? I saw a request for this in a magazine,

and had to laugh.

I think the understatement of the year in that recipe has to be...

..."Best when used within 3-4 hours."

Can you picture this "dish" once the mayo soaks in?

And "used"... in any normal recipe, wouldn't that line read, ""eaten" or "served" within 3-4 hours"?

"Used" for WHAT? Dinner Guest Repellent?

Michael

Oy! I can picture that gal on Food Network whose clothes match the drapes...

...wearing pastel orange whilst tossing a bag of those peanuts with Reeses Pieces and a Balsamic Vinegar reduction.

ACH DU!

Michael

LOL- I remember that this was a very popular recipe in Central MN where I grew up

I made it once and remember it was actually not too bad considering.....but I may be remembering wrong as it was so many years ago. I think I will try it again. Maybe tweak it....nah, I doubt anything could make it better.

Funny, she has so meny, (Kitchenaids, not shoes) but I've never once seen her use one!

Not on purpose. When she comes on after someone else I mean to change the channel,

but I just sit there staring with the remote in my hand. I'm awestruck at how she can redecorate the kitchen to match her blouse but she hasn't time to grate her own cheese.

Actually, Curious, I never noticed the camelion Kitchenaids until you pointed it out on Gail's.
