Are you up to the challenge? Cook 90 - Epicurious editor is cooking scratch every meal in January.

ditto what Cathy said

I'm in a similar boat - have to drive nearly an hour to get to a decent non-chain restaurant. I always try to take advantage of good restaurants and other food venues when I travel. I just came back from driving to visit family in Gainesville and Atlanta that included excellent restaurants along the way. My next foodie trip is coming up in March - a week in northern CA, including the spectacular Artisan Cheese Festival in Petaluma.

The Artisan Cheese Festival is fun...I've

done volunteer work with them in the past. Will be out of town for it this year so will miss it. You're sure to find some good restaurants to enjoy -- you'll be so close to the Napa and Sonoma areas -- soooo many good restaurants in that region.

Can you suggest a few places?

I have probably tried most of the well known places. Can you suggest places less well known? I'm staying at a friend's place on Lombard near Embarcadero. Since I will be by myself I generally try to have my big meal at lunch or as soon as the restaurant opens for dinner, especially if there is no valet parking.

My head 9 out of 10 times will read the word correctly spelled instead

of the typo and don't even notice it unless it is pointed out. Seems weird but I do. But just say when you want something corrected. I won't change anything unless someone wants it.
