Billed as a take no prisoners night of gluttony, my roommate & his brother's menu for tonight.

Adding to this mix, I made a smoked trout, artichoke and fromage blanc terrine (easier than it sounds) and the creamy chicken liver pate. Apparently these guys spent $600 on meat alone. Expected number of guests? 20. Gluttony, indeed!

I had nothing to do with this menu, but I love seeing someone else's point of view. PS. My roommate and his brother are 2nd generation Chinese. Can you see the influence? smileys/smile.gif

Here's the menu thus far.

Two oversized ovens in two different (nearby) hes. Ham is going on the grill, which

is new to me.

That other sauce/ingredient...I have no idea. They are so knowledgeable on Asian food, makes whatever I know insignificant. It's always a learning adventure! The best is that the brother is equally knowledgeable in many, many cuisines. I can't stump him. Ever. And believe me, I try. I eat with him whenever I get a chance. No other person has advanced my knowledge/skills more than him. His primary business these days is spirits (alcohol) and travels up to 25 days a month going to events and such. Those bartenders profiled in magazines? He knows them all. He had a party about a month ago, and I always do a doubletake when I'm in the room. "Didn't I see you in....Lucky Peach?" You get the idea. If my life is one part fantasy? It's because early on, he tossed a liberal amount of fairy dust my way.

It seems to be sausage,I thought that was lap cheong. Different kind, I assume. I bet it will be a

great dinner. Have a good time!

What a wonderful invitation U have rec'd, Traca! I especially like the 'hogs in a quilt' which I am

wondering might be somehow similar to our 'pigs in a blanket' bit a much more gourmet version? You'll have to let us know after you eat that appetizer.
And the dessert section is definitely Chinese which is way too short for this kid! Smile. Have a wonderful time!

Mo - You surfaced from your big party last weekend!!! I have been looking at Fitflaps since your

post. I am such a slipper person. How did the party go? I know you mentioned you have it down to a science, with your timing, but it is an enormous undertaking with your menu. How did it come together?

He's called it Hogs in a Quilt. smileys/smile.gif What's up with pie & Chinese? I offered to make a cake, he

was like, "Pie or bust."

All went really well, a few things didn't make the "cut" due to lack of time

the salmon spirals, the stilton tart, smileys/frown.gif (was looking forward to making that) ran short on time.
My "helpers" (overnight guests from Hawaii) didn't get to our house (with my lone other helper DH picking them up)
til 3:30, so it was a long lonely afternoon prep cram!
All went well, a lot of food went, some leftovers, but overall, I guess there were good choices, since most was gone!
Feet still good after switching to high wedges smileys/smile.gif definitely due to FitFlops during the day!

Thanks for asking--hope you have a Merry Christmas!!

No desserts come to mind at all when I think Chinese so that was what my comment referred to. There

was only "pies" on your friend's menu! Most homes I go to as a holiday guest or for yuletide catering have MULTIPLE types of desserts, and only one entree (2 at most). Your friend's menu was just the opposite. Must be why most Chinese are so slim, huh?

If I've already shared the following anecdote, forgive the repetition, but the topic is timely so I'll tap it out again. On 1 of Jay Leno's shows where he used to show candid pictures that people would take and send in, a viewer snapped a shot of a Chinese menu. By each food item listed there was an asterisk, and the accompanying note said something along these lines: Quantity of this dish will feed 4 Americans--or 8 Chinese.

Wow, what an amazing feast! How many guests did you have? I hope you have pictures to share.

PICTURES!

Looks like I forgot to take a photo of the table. Picture two 6' tables filled with food, plus the 'buffet' set up on the counter. It was like that. What impressed me the most was my friend who did 90% of the cooking, and totally made it look easy. "This isn't my first rodeo."

My favorite part of the night was with this Filipino guy showed up in a sparkling Santa hat. He'd just flown up from LA, dropped his bags at the hotel and came over for dinner. He had such a magnetic charisma, the entire room changed when he walked in. And funny? He'd had a tough week. The perfunctory "What do you do?" Was followed by, "I.T. for Sony Pictures." Yeah. I put a cocktail in his hand...quick!

Surprisingly, the kielbasa wrapped in crescent rolls turned out to be really good! And great for the kids. I hate myself for saying that, but it's true. I wish there were some left over!

My smoked trout and artichoke terrine turned out awesome. I'll be posting the recipe later. Too bad there was so much food, it barely had a dent in it. I'm going to another party tonight. Will bring it there.

My favorite dish of the night was the crown pork roast. I missed the making of that entirely. Will have to find out more about that.

And two things that make me very happy about last night. 1. We ended with more alcohol than we started. smileys/smile.gif and 2. Everyone chipped in and helped clean up. I went to bed early, got up and the place was completely back in order. I took out the garbage, unloaded the dishwasher and it was done. Love it.

I learned a lot watching my friend and his brother prepare for this party. There was too much food, and that was intentional. They made up hot care packages and took them to friends working the late shift at bars & restos around the city. Also, the food and preparation. So effortless. One day, I aspire to be that at ease cooking for a party. Even if I don't show it, the panic, high alert adrenaline rush is seething inside. For now, I consider myself schooled. smileys/smile.gif
