Bragging post: My mother has been asked to make her strudel for Austrian conductor Manfred Honeck

Marilyn, What a nice compliment....Now it all makes sense...talent passes talent in your case.

No, she'll make the dough on Tuesday, then get up at 3:00 am to make them.

They'll still be warm, packaged and sitting at the store that sells them by 7:00 am, ready for pick-up.

She conscripts to 2 stores and one orchard, making 24, 36 or 48 strips per store per week.

What can I say...the woman's got genes that just keep on working. She's also the same woman who took a sledge hammer to a wall after deciding the kitchen was too small. ( I swear, just like in Fried Green Tomatoes, which she never saw.)

After my father died, she taught herself how to WELD (not solder), how to reroute duct-work, how to run electrical wiring...the woman even wallpapers CEILINGS BY HERSELF! Growing up, I saw her at her industrial-strength sewing machine SEWING A TENT.

Mind you, I have 5 other brothers and sisters in her immediate area if she needs help, but she likes to keep busy.

"...took a sledge hammer to a wall"...this is wonderful! Marilyn, thanks

so much for sharing this fabulous description of your mom. Maybe one of these days she can somehow settle down and watch that funny movie and see Kathy Bates tear down a wall (one of the best scenes in that great film). Here I am scared of messing with phyllo and your mom can create her own "see through" strudel dough. Sheesh. You ought to copy these posts and send them to her - she'll get a laugh! Ann

This is seriously impressive. Kudos to your mom, Marilyn. There's nothing like a good strudel.

Someone should write this up for publication--this story deserves a wider audience. Marilyn, has any of your family contacted the lifestyle section of the local paper where your mom lives? It's a great story.

Amanda, the newspapers have tried for years to "highlight" her. She's shy and doesn't want

to be bothered. She doesn't advertise and she won't take phone calls anymore, but folks track her down anyway.

maybe she would do it if it was together with your sister, and she was just there to

"consult", but then maybe she couldn't help but get involved and be the "star" without her even realizing it.

it would just be a shame to not get this amazing woman documented. of course, her family

knows and that's probably all that matters to her.
