Oh, and don't forget to secure the garbage lid when you take out the shells

we have racoons and they LOVE getting in the trash if you have crab or shrimp 'trimmings' Scared the bejeevers out of me the first time when I opened the lid and saw two racoons down in there enjoying themselves and looking up at my like "what do you want, can't you see we are enjoying our dinner?"

So we got smarter, we thought but it was worse. Next time the lid was held down with a bungee type cord so they sort of pushed it over enough to get in and one couldn't get back out. Needless to say the trash folks didn't take the last bag of trash when they got down and saw a big furry thing nor did they tell us. Not sure how long it was in there but DH started fussing about me putting stuff in there and it leaking and told DD and I to clean it. She wouldn't start it without me and I went out and threw open the lid and ran the other direction to get a breath of fresh air. When I went back wth pine-sol in hand to quickly pour in there I looked down quickly enough to see a big brown furry thing. At first I thought my daughter had thrown away this big floppy moose that takes up half a bed. I ran away and got another breath of fresh air before returning to realize it was a dead racoon.

At this point I told DH this wasn't my problem. So he came ou ad we dumped the trash can on the driveway and picked all the trash out after putting on rubber gloves. Then we loaded the racoon into the back of his truck. I drove and we went down a nearby country road. I pulled over and he quickly jumped out grabbed the pitch fork and pitched the dead racoon over into the woods.

We now double the strap so that they can't push the lid over.

Oh ewww!

I feel bad for the raccoon and really bad for you guys! that is the worst... What a great story though!

At my old pad I used to have this huge paving stone on top of the metal can. The raccoons would try and try to get in, it sounded like they were trying to (badly) play the steel drums! LOL

Now we have mandatory composting and recycling, so all food scraps, egg shells, food stained paper and containers go in the green bin; cardboard, paper cans, bottles go in the blue bin; and plastics go in the black bin. I have my little compost (city supplied) bucket, a recycling bag, a dry compost bag and a garbage bag all next to my stove in my teeny kitchen. It's so complicated to throw anything out these days! What do you do with kleenex? dental floss?

But really it's great and I'm so proud of my city for doing this now, and making it mandatory. They sell the compost to the vineyards etc for fertilizer and use that money to pay for the recycling program. The goal is 0 net waste by 2012. But it sure takes a bit of thinking and organization!!!!

Oh thank you all for your support and kindness. I'm just goofing around & having fun

and your words and thoughts really mean so much. Really truly!!

Congrats - Heather - so awesome!

And I can totally understand why they selected you - your blog is great! (loved the picture of you too - you are *beautiful*!)

I'm just in the midst of building a blog for my divaentertains.com site. (Well - I'm having it 'built' to match - I'm pretty clueless how to actually build it:). I featured a few recipes on the shopping site and they get daily traffic so I thought it was just a natural to turn it into a blog (the e-commerce site isn't really formatted to do anything but be a store). I'm going to try to feature 'easy yet elegant/great' recipes (many of which I'm sure come from here, entertaining tips, etc.)

I've roped my DH into learning about photography (today he's picking up "Digital Photography for Dummies" at our library and he's going to make a light box)smileys/smile.gif

Wishing you continued success!

Deb
