Can someone answer this for me, please? I am in the market for a new stovetop. Not a stove- I have

a double wall oven and just a stovetop with cabinets underneath. I can get a brand new stove with a broiler and oven for about $200. less than the stovetop.

Why?

Because stovetop technology is much more advanced

than that of the combined 4-burners & an oven units.

Among other things, you can get stovetops with much hotter burners; with interchangeable burners/grills/griddles; with much more precise controls; in a greater diversity of sizes, number of burners, configuration of burners, etc.

When you look at the high-end makers--Wolf, and Viking, and like that--you're actually talking commercial grade products being sold at retail.

Check out Dacor. I have a six burner gas cooktop that I love...

It is totally sealed. So when I remove the top grates for cleaning, I have a solid, black porcelain surface to clean.....that's it. So easy and so fun to cook on.

Lol, we've wondered the same thing! DH says it's because they can get it.

I wonder if it's because they're not as in demand anymore, at least not here. At one time, it seemed that larger more expensive houses (read more space) had the ovens separate. Then the professional style ranges became popular and I very seldom see a new home with separate ovens and cooktop. Kitchens seem to be getting smaller and that's one way to save on space plus I think there's a consumer demand for those neat looking ranges. At the lower end, they can mount the microwave over the range (I hate that) and really save space. Therefore, it's a supply and demand thing, they don't sell as many cooktops, mostly replacements. Just a guess on my part, did you ask the appliance salesman? He might actually know, lol. I love the cooktop and ovens separate myself, there are some really awesome cooktops out there, such as the Dacor mentioned, but yes, they are quite expensive

Cyn, my view

is that the stovetops are trendy and everyone is putting them in with kitchen remodels. The manufacturer's have discovered they can ask more and people will pay it.

it was the same thing with my new frig. I got a "counter depth" and it was

less frig for more money :-0

I run any large appliance purchases by my repair guys. they know what has problems and what doesn't. they said the price difference for the frig and stovetop are because they don't sell as many so it costs more to manufacture. bottom line, they're considered "specialty" items.

PS, Cyn, have you considered checking out a used resturant supply place? you might get a good

deal on your top.

Randi, that is excellent advice.

I have learned that lesson the hard way with all the troubles I am having with my Kitchen Aid double wall ovens. After talking with several repair guys and other owners, I have learned that while KA makes great mixers, they absolutely STINK at making ovens. Live and learn. My repair guy was very candid about his experiences with them and it wasn't flattering. I will definitely ask repairman before I buy the next oven. If I make the repairs, AGAIN, on these stinking KA ovens (did I say they STINK???), I will have spent the equivalent of the purchase price on parts and repair bills. I'm probably going to cut my losses and replace them.

yikes Richard! aren't there lemon laws or something? or even laws about

how many repairs within a year's time?

I had a heckofa time with the GE range I bought because of the flame guide design. enough sqwaking to GE and Sears and they took it back at the full price I paid. I checked with the "guys" and now have a frigidaire that cooks beautifully!

same with the frig, they told to me to get a kenmore elite cause the repairs on them are usually just cosmetic things.

BTW - they stopped me from getting a commerical style Wolf which I was just drooling over!

I wuv those guys!

it was 2 or 3 years ago so I don't remember all the details. I think it

was some function issues and over-all quality along with repair problems. they said it was the new ones they've been making and if I could find an old Wolf in good condition I would love it. I can't remember exactly how old though.

repair guys really are an untapped resource and just have a wealth of knowledge. our first dishwasher in our new house was a lemon so I got to know them. so far, they haven't steered us wrong on anything we've purchased.

Don't discount the impact of the construction industry. Huge numbers of all-in-one appliances are

bought at a time; and of course, we know what that does to manufacturing costs and the time needed to recoup capital costs of design and tooling.

Those of us who want the fancier stuff, such as cooktops, have higher-end kitchens and are willing to pay the disproportionate cost. Those do not generally go into mid-range housing units even though the appliance may well have all the bells and whistles as the two separate units.

It also becomes a way for 'designers' of housing units to differentiate between the more expensive housing units and the less. Like....the penthouse gets the separate units, because, after all, it's the penthouse. We epxect something different and it's important to keep that distinction alive.

Well, I'll be darned! My cooktop came with the double burner pancake/bacon flat grill...

I will have to check into this one. Your cooktop is different than mine. My controls are on the front of the stainless face which hangs over the top of the bottom cabinets. Yours has the vent in back and it drops out of site, right?
