Cooking Question of the Day: Do you wear and apron? If so, what kind?

--For everyday cooking I ususally don't.

--For all day cooking I often tuck both ends of a dish cloth into my waistband. Mostly to wipe my hands on.

At work it's part of the uniform, so yes...

What I hate about it is that it's a waist type, not a full bib, and my jacket tends to get quite messy - but the service does the laundry, so who cares, really!

At home I rarely wear one, only if I'm already dressed for dinner, i.e. Thanksgiving, parties, etc...

I also tuck towels into the strings...

Yes...

A chef's jacket when I'm cooking for pay/sale or charity events.

At home, if I'm cooking, I wear a standard full apron, I got mine at a local restaurant-supply shop. If I don't, and sit down, whatever food is on my clothing is quickly being attacked by a cat, ouch... If I'm baking, I wear my grandmother's apron (from Germany, this apron is now on its third generation), it reminds me of the great family bakers I've been lucky enough to have in my life.

Don't normally use one. I like the tip about the tea towel. I'm constantly reaching for one...

so that would save me some time. I'll have to remember that.

I've been using aprons more of late.....

since when I do cook now, it tends to be a marathon, and I'd rather not wear everything I'm cooking.
I have a few "full coverage" aprons that I like, one from Chef Wear and another from King Arthur Flour Company. They wrap all the way around me, and tie in front, then I pull a tea towel through the tie.

I wear my grandmother's apron too. It's full coverage and ties in the back. My aunt thought to give

it to me when Grandma died, and this aunt has since passed on as well. I fondly remember both these fine ladies when I put it on.

You guys are so fortunate to have your grandmother's aprons!

I so wish I'd been older so I could have taken my paternal grandmother's aprons! She had the full front aprons in several styles. She loved to cook and bake and was faboulous! I never saw her in the kitchen without an apron! I was in 7th grade when she died. Can still remember the taste and texture of her sourdough potato bread! smileys/smile.gif We had Sunday dnner at her house every week and she would put on quite the spread, including homemade soups and desserts.

I do have her Daisy Butter Churn, a crockery bowl, Noritake Azalea china and her silver service. Too bad no one thought to save her recipes but I'm not sure she ever wrote anything down - never saw anything written. I think she cooked totally from memory. I tend to do that too, on things I cook regularly.

Maybe I'll start checking on eBay for apron patterns and make me a couple!

I love the tip about tucking the towel in the front tie of the apron! Thanks!

I have a green & pink striped "Mimi's Cafe" apron that my cousin who used to waitress there gave me.

I only put it on when I've got nice clothes on and making something messy.

OH, doncha just love Mimi's Cafe?

I used to eat at the one on Beach Blvd near Huntington Beach, Ca. There one in Tulsa that I always eat at when I make it there but it's nothing like what Mimi's used to be in the early 1980's. They served a ramekin of custard with every meal at that time. It was wonderful.

The restaurant was all Country French in decor and they had beautiful chintz curtains!

It was my oldest dd's favorite restaurant when she was 10!

How FUN to have that apron, Mimi!!! smileys/wink.gif

I wear one when I'm doing a lot of cooking or baking...

but not when I'm just making a quick dinner. I sometimes regret it when I don't. I wear a full apron that ties in the back. I adore the half aprons - especially those at kitsch'n glam (like the shortcake style) but am too much of a slob not to wear a full one.

If you're in the market for a new apron, Anna Wang has a great collection at her website: www.kitschnglam.com

They sell her aprons at Anthropologie in the dc area and other stores as well as at the website.

I just hang a towel over my shoulder & let the splatters fall where they may. smileys/smile.gif NT

I own at least 6 aprons but don't use them

I use the over the shoulder towel method and always change my clothes before dinner!
