A great book: "The Patisseries of Paris: Chocolatiers, Tea Salons, Ice Cream Parlors, and more"...
I would be careful getting travel books and other related travel gifts, because if they're anything like me, they already bought the travel books, the dictionaries, the converters, etc. a long time ago while planning and preparing for said trip.
Cheeses can be an overppowering mystery in France. I wish I had bought books much
earlier than I did. This is one that I found to be comprehensive (even though it does not mention my favourite but obscure, Montbriac). I have smaller books for travelling but I prefer this one.
There is a forward by Joel Robuchon. The book details the regional cheeses but also provides excellent info on categorizing them and what to look for. I like books of this sort because I can make my own notes in them as I chomp through the countryside, indeed one of life's pleasures.
However, the price noted here has me stumped. I think it must have increased in price exponentially since we bought it. YIKES!
There is supposed to be a great language app - you just speak into the phone
And it displays the translation that you show the Parisian. There is also an app that let's you aim your phone at signs (or foreign words) and it shows you the translation.
