Dry-for-now Weekend Six

I'm trying Earnie's honey cheesecake for DH's birthday dinner tomorrow, subbing a graham cracker crust instead.

'Mowed the lawn for (hopefully) the last time this year. Expecting a WET beginning of the week, so figured we'd better get it done now.

I'm thawing some cabbage rolls for supper tonight. I hope the rice freezes better than the pasta did ( I really oughta change my rotation of green vegetables... seeming to have a lot of kale, chard, and green beans lately. I'll be looking through T&T's vegetable section next week!

Had lunch yesterday in a downtown cafe with a friend from out-of-town; chicken salad with white Stilton, grapes, and bacon. Very good. It was a toss-up between that and asparagus quiche.

Last night I made "stewed" apples in the crockpot, just too lazy to roll out another crust for a pie. Cut-up apples, cinnamon, a teeny bit of sugar, and butter, cooked on low overnight. Made a great topping for waffles this a.m.

Trying Plum Phyllo Pouches - a Weight Watcher's recipe made in a muffin tin - hmm, why am I craving carbs...

I took some photos at the beach today. Not sure if this slideshow will work

The first two photos are older and show a typical sunny day. The rock jetty is always above water and there are usually fisherman out there, with sharks trolling about waiting for them to fall in.

The next two photos are from today. Note the jetty is almost completely under water and this wasn't even high tide.

This was a fairly beign impact from the hurricane.

Saturday Six

1. Made sausage, spinach, chickpea, and rice soup tonight (chicken broth base). I think there's a name for this, but I'm not sure what...

2. Breakfast: Belgian waffles with warm raspberry sauce and lemon yogurt. Sounds weird but is delicious. smileys/smile.gif

3. Stocked up yesterday on hurricane food (i.e., carbs). And yet I now realize that we're still going to run out of milk and cookies by tomorrow. How is that possible?! Back to the store...

4. Lunch was a blur (cheese and baguette bits); all I know is that it involved antibiotics for bronchitis! Yay! However, thanks to the storm, I now get to look forward to spending another few days cooped up inside! :{

5. My plan for tonight and the foreseeable couple of days: curl up with those massive Dorie Greenspan tomes I bought a few months ago and haven't really looked at. (Note to self: check baking supplies before going to store.)

6. Am just now realizing that stores of pasta sauce and canned tomatoes are not the best hurricane-ready foods, considering that they require pasta to enjoy...and power with which to fire up the electric (bah!) stove... Hmmmmmm. I wonder if there's any tuna left in our neighborhood....

True!

Friends in Florida keep emailing me: "Are you going to be ok?! Can you get out of town before the storm?!"

My response: "Why in God's name would I do that?! I live two blocks from a great grocery store, and live one block from great restaurants!" smileys/wink.gif

Though I imagine a hurricane delivery tip has to be more than what I usually give... smileys/wink.gif

You got that right Sandra...I will never forget the Blizzard of '83...

Friday, February 11, two days before Wagner's death centennary death observance on Sunday the 13th, the Rockefeller Center Cinema played the premiere of the new Hans-Jürgen Syberberg "Parsifal."

At 11:00, not having a rehearsal that day of the Juilliard Orchestra, I walked to Rockefeller Center in glorious warm sunshine to go to this 6 hour movie. I came out to a foot and a half of snow.

Manhattan surface traffic was stopped dead. The people took over the streets. We were still mobile with subway, and a jolly holiday was declared and Manhattan came out to play.

I will never forget going into Central Park after midnight and there were thousands of people in the park (and one never went into the park after dark in those days). People leaping backwards off of the big Manhattan schist granite blobs in the park into snow piles to make snow angels. It was magical. We stayed up all night frolicking in the park, playing in the snow, grouping and then regrouping with all our friends because EVERYONE was out playing.

Ahhh, nothing like youth, a big city, and a BIG snow storm...

Weekend six???

Spent the day yesterday biking out in the country. We did the 24 mile route of The Great Pumpkin Ride. Our rest stop was at the 14 mile mark where we stopped at a lovely stone inn and had all things pumpkin-soup, pie, cheesecake, whoopie pies and more, YUM!! That gave us the needed energy to finish the 10 miles back to start. Lunch at a local bistro was delicious, I had a wedge of caesar salad and a very yummy veggie chili.

So what to make today after packing away all the yard stuff-bird baths, bird houses, potted plants, deck furniture, pumpkins, etc. Not really sure how to prepare but I think both butternut squash soup and either chili or beef stew (from Charlie) will be the winner.

I think you guys further north of the DC area will get it worse that us--take care!!!

Battening down the hatches, patio furniture, plants, etc

Fillling everything that will hold water.
Prepping flashlights, candles, hand sanitizers out. Hoping we don't lose power for more than a day or two. Last time was over a week.
Making Traca's cheese puffs later today, figured they would be a good snack. Planning out what can be re-heated on the grill, etc. Ugh!
Stay safe everyone!!

They just shut down all mass transit as of 7PM tonite. Better get the tuna, Erin! smileys/smile.gif be safe!

I so hope the weather service is overselling this one. I remember so well being

snowed in in Harpers Ferry. Take care everybody!

Sent DH out for storm essentials. Batteries, milk, lantern oil and anything else he could think of

He came home with the above plus two cases of beer.
Made baked beans and half a ham- good at room temp- just in case.
Picked brussel sprouts and blanched and froze.
Made Traca's pumpkin bread- really excellent!
Cleared the deck of outdoor furniture.
Made a pitcher of martinis 'cause I'm done and my knee hurts.
