Duke’s mayonnaise

For years, I’ve read about Duke’s being the best mayonnaise, but it’s always been an item the West Coast does not carry. Apparently till now. I went to order mayonnaise for pick up and found Duke’s listed to my surprise! The thing is, it’s listed as “sugar-free mayonnaise”. Which made me wonder was it just always made without sugar or is it specifically a sugar-free product and not the original version? The photo of the label doesn’t seem to highlight that it’s a specific sugar-free product, but those of you who have used Duke’s, do you know the answer?

I’ve always bought best foods which on the East Coast is Hellmann’s. Now with Duke’s as an option suddenly there’s a choice.

A quick search came up with this-

AI Overview

Yes, Dukes Mayonnaise is a naturally sugar-free product, including their Real, Light, and flavored varieties, as they contain no added sugar. This means that individuals following a restricted sugar diet can confidently choose Duke's mayonnaise.

I think it's always been sugar free, but Hellman's contains sugar, so maybe they're playing it up as a competitive advantage. Duke's also quitely went from a 32 oz jar to a 30 oz jar. Their old marketing angle was that they had 2 oz more than Hellman's for the same price. With Mike's mayonnaise coming on strong, I guess it's time for mayo wars. :) I didn't care for Mike's. We don't use much mayo in our house, but when I do, it's Duke's. Can only find at the Lidl near us.

There are four Southern brands that are all very similar and interchangeable to me, though I will still opt for Blue Plate.

Blue Plate was out of New Orleans. JFG was out of Morristown, TN. Reilly Foods out of New Orleans started Luzianne coffee and tea and they purchased both Blue Plate and JFG.

Duke's was out of Greenville, SC. Sauer out of Richmond, VA. Sauer bought Duke's and then another company bought both companies then they were acquired by a private equity company earlier this year so it will be interesting to see if that changes anything like it often does.

While I think Blue Plate is best, all four are so similar that they are really pretty indistinguishable. Duke's is the only one with ZERO sugar but the other three have so little that they have 0 carbs and is not detectable in the flavor IMHO. I think the sugar component in other brands is why I don't like other brands. Hellman's has enough that each serving contains 1g of carbs. If I remember correctly, these four brands also tend to have less ingredients and no gunk in them as I say. They are more like a traditional homemade mayonnaise. So if you live outside the south but see any of these 4 available, just know they are SO close, get what you can find. There was a period of time that I could not find Blue Plate here in Nashville but now it's in every store. They all have a little more tanginess to them, probably because they don't have any or much sugar. And yes, I love my condiments, particularly mayonnaise. A sandwich isn't a sandwich without mayonnaise (except PB&Js)!
