Curious1, that is precisely the method I use 4 oven racks b-cuz my manual warns that leaving the
racks inside the oven during a self-cleaning cycle can discolor them and not only that, I have found it will strip them of something or another like a coating that allows your baking sheets and casseroles dishes to slide smoothly over them. (The latter won't be too bad after just going through one self-cleaning cycle, but that slowly worsened for me after several rack cleanings inside an old oven that has since died & been replaced.)
If it's a sunny day, I will put the racks on newspapers outdoors, spray both sides of the racks w/ Easy-Off and then slide everything (racks + newspaper) down inside a huge garbage bag and tie it tightly shut. I let the bag sit in the sun for several hours and after the bag is reopened, the burned-on gunk will have softened and be easy enough to wipe off with a moist cloth or wet paper towel.
If it's cold outside, I just let the bag sit on our basement concrete floor as that is warmer than inside the garage. If I have to let things sit in a cool area, I leave the bag tied up at least 24 hours before opening it to wipe the racks. (I usually miss 1 or 2 small caked-on places with the spray so will have to haul out a Brillo pad to scour those spots, but the rest is easy to wipe off.)
This was an ancient suggestion I read in the "Hints to Heloise" newspaper column at least 25 years ago. Am glad to know someone else still uses it! wigs
