English Trifle question

I'm making an English trifle for Christmas dinner dessert. The recipe calls for a 1/2 cup of sherry to be poured over the spongecake to soak for 30 minutes. Usually this is fine, but this year I can't have any alcohol...I'm not sure I can skip the step...1/2 cup seems like a lot of liquid. Any thoughts on what I can substitute for the sherry?

A simple syrup would work fine

Flavor with a small splash of lemon or orange juice to add a bit of acid.

Whenever I see "English Trifle" I'm reminded of the Friends episode where Rachel adds beef and peas to the dish after the cookbook pages stick together.

Oh, good idea. And I'll try to avoid adding in beef and peas. Although Joey did enjoy it!

"What's not to like? Peas, gooood. Mashed potatoes, gooood. Beef, GOOOOOOOOD!"

Can you tell I've watched too many reruns of Friends?
