Ever get aggravated about not being able to reproduce something simple you really liked?

I had the best sandwich the other day. Simply baguette, fresh mozzarella, sliced grilled portobellos, lettuce, tomato, a dab of pesto and mayo on the bread. Cold, not heated. Tried to make one tonight. Not even close to the same. Guess the trick is in the proportions....

and sometimes it's the actual ingredients....can be a huge difference in flavor...for instance,

the bread. There's some awesome bread out there, and well, some less than awesome...lol. I'd say keep trying to replicate, or better yet, call and ask. Often you'll reach someone who will answer your plea with details to fill the gap and make it the memorable item you tasted there. Good luck, and let us know how you make out.

edited to add: another thought...now that you've made it at home, perhaps you can go back and order it again and really disect it to see the differences. *Then* ask questions.)

could even be something like a dab of garlic in the mayo - not noticeable but makes a big difference

Get one "to go".

Then you won't have to sit in the restaurant looking like a mad scientist (emphasis on "mad") as you dissect it.

Great idea. It's kind of a gourmet- to- go place anyway. I think it is all in the proportions,

plus my mushrooms were too drippy & too much pesto. Needed dryer mushroom slices, thicker cheese slices, thinner tomato slices, less pesto.

I can bake just about anything and do a great job but am terrible with pie pastryI actually

hate having to roll anything out. My frustration tolerance gets very low with rolled things.

It's so easy - carton of whipped cream, 2 tbl. powdered sugar, and beat the heck outta it!

But don't beat it into butter.... just to where it will look good piled on a piece of pie smileys/smile.gif
