FrRood Rant:Went to a really nice restaurant last night. The chef was trained at the CIA.

English as a second language--that's me. I was always corrected in grade school so it's no big deal

to me. In second grade I swore up and down to my teacher that Winnipeg was spelled Vinnipek---that's the way it was pronounced in my house and I had never seen it written. that's where I was born and we were doing some kind of family history stuff and my Mom was called in to find out where indeed I was born. I would never expect anyone to pronounce Frankfurter Kranz or Bienenstich etc etc the correct German way. I might say, in Germany they pronounce it . . .

I'm coming clean....another one I've been saying incorrectly.

Fascinating read Maria, thank you.

I consider that particular one "difficult" because we are asking folks to use

a foreign pronunciation which they may be totally unfamiliar with. The American pronunciation really is "N-dive", such as it is. LOL

I was told I had a *bar* on my NC property. Right up there, by the big rock. I'm thinking of

adding a disco ball and dart boards.

There is no such thing as Americanized pronunciation. When

we travel outside the U.S. we just look stupid and lazy.

I would agree that in France I would say "on-deev", but if I am addressing

the produce boy at Safeway, he reads "n-dive" and will have an easier path to finding it for me. So, in America, (as in Rome) do as the Americans do. LOL
I am always amused by what my pronunciation of the famous brasserie in Paris is in my mind--Bofinger. . I try to do better when I am speaking of it in Paris.

See, that's what I said! Because that's like saying chic is pronounced chick instead of SHeek

It's a French word!

However, I agree the kid at Safeway doesn't know this.

this brings to mind Giada and her very Italian pronunciation of spaghetti and parmesan etc etc that

really irritates folks watching the show. must admit it bugs me too sometimes and I don't think I could pronounce it like she does, at least not here in USA. When I go on my dream trip to Tuscookany(sigh) for cooking classes, I will pronounce it the Italian way. or at least try.
