FYI if anyone is having trouble accessing or logining into the site…

First thing to try is, do is not use your old link to access the site.

Then try different ways to get in, google, safari, Firefox, chrome, DuckDuckGo, etc.

Next, if that doesn’t work, clear your cache on your device/computer and restart your device/computer. (This is the gold standard for these types of issues)

And then retry, using different access options above again if need be. I suspect that will clear the issue and you can login.

Sometimes pathways can get clogged and one must clear them and start over to access.

Maria and I (as moderators) have noticed that the site SW locks out users who haven't posted in 5 years from logging in. I know of two very frequent posters from Gail's Swap all the way to this site who can't get back in.

This may be why:
Even though they are still listed as users, the site does not accept their password.
They cannot change their password because that request goes to the administrative site manager.
We no longer have administrative support to re-activate
They have tried all of the options Maria provided above to no avail.
They cannot create a new user account because that also requires an email confirmation from administrative site manage (see above).

And while a person can access and view this site, the SEARCH function is not available unless you are LOGGED IN as a user.

This may have been done as a security function to avoid other web site from flooding our site with false users, either as spam, to promote their own site or with malicious intent. Whatever the reason it was done, we--as moderators--are unable to facilitate expired or new users.

Thanks Maria and Marilyn - my account is set up on an email that I no longer have access to and I have messaged Paul's son(s) hoping to get it changed before I get locked out somehow accidentally but I haven't heard back from them. If I knew how, I would gladly help take over administering the website. Let me know if I can help in any way.

Actually, I just checked again and it shows a way to change your email but now I am too afraid to try that in case it needs some sort of action on their part. I swear when I looked a while back, that option was not there.

mcm, you see the issue we are in, We don't have a site administrator, but more important, we really should be paying Paul's family business to maintain this site on their server. It was originally built by Paul & Mimi to support Finer_Kitchen online business. Our swap was just the happy add-on to that business to pick up the black hole left by Epicurious and Gail's Swap. After Finer_Kitchen's endeavour, Paul absorbed the costs for our swap for years, other than the donations made through this site.

If we can get hold of Paul's son, we need to do the right thing and pay for the service.

Well what just happened? I have been trying since the collapse and nothing worked. Somebody must have done something as I just tried the same route again and got in.

Thank you somebody.

Marg, Paul’s son updated the security clearance. We’re not sure how he knew iwe were having issues. Maria & Michael made donations; Maria and Melissa attempted to contact Mimi, various messages were sent.

We’re just not sure which action worked.

But, as it stands, our site does not have a site administrator so password updates, restoring users and registering new users can’t be processed as the SW requires an administrator to process it. This function is part of Paul’s server business.

Our users who haven’t posted in 4 years can no longer log in. They can view posts, but the search function and posting are not available

By the way, I did send you an email when the site was restored.

Indeed I have been making numerous daily attempts since your email, from all different directions, but was never able to get in, regardless of what I tried. In fact, I was trying every day even before that. The attempt today just seemed magical. I did nothing that I had not done before. Could have been my issues but I hope others keep trying as well. I am hoping that those who have not been able to get in, just keep on trying.

It is astounding how relevant this site is to some of us.

In fact, this is weird. I tried several times to log in but was told that my name did not exist. When eventually, I tried to register anew, using the same nonexistent name, I was told that the name already existed. That was when I decided to keep on trying to log in as the old me. After several days of trying it worked.

Well now I’m really confused. I know that you post, so that blows the whole “only people who haven’t posted in a few years are blocked” theory.

And what triggered you being able to get back in? I’ve got questions!

And am very annoyed that I haven’t a clue how to answer/resolve them.

Did you by chance try clearing your cache and still couldn’t get in until it eventually just worked? Because sometimes when changes are made administratively, old pathways, don’t always work, and the system will allow only so many tries (behind the scene) to get it to work before it just gives you an error message. Clearing the cash allows all those pathways to be reset and giving you a direct line into a system. So I’m just curious if you tried to clear the cash and then it still didn’t work… Until it did.

Nope, no cache clearing. It just happened. I did nothing differently.

What I should have tried and can't recall if I actually did, was try with a different browser. But it was my regular browser that got me in, the same one that had been refusing me all along. The strange thing though, is the contradiction in the recognition of my login name.
