gas grill grate experiment: success!

no sales I actually got back into woodworking after 20+ years

for two reasons. 1) to get off the computer and do something in the physical world and 2) to share with my kids and do some projects with them - and likewise have them learn to enjoy something off the computer, video games etc. Along the same line, I encourage them to do cooking/baking projects.

Really beautiful! Do you use a laithe? (sp)? I recall someone posted a link on how artists were

using the wood from the trees from Hurricane Sandy to make bowls, etc. Your creations are beautiful! And agree with Cheezz, what a great dad!

yes I enjoy lathe work - "wood turning"

woodworkers sometimes make the distinction between "turning" and "flat work"
I like the lathe for among other reasons, there is a little more art than science and often a need for ongoing improvisation. Sort of like cooking versus baking if cooking was turning and baking was flat work.

For example you may start on a bowl but as you work on it, you find a void in the wood or otherwise that requires improvisation or even may force you to go with a completely different direction, on the fly. Woodturners often value these imperfections and even highlight them. With flat work you are usually dealing with precise planning and execution ("measure twice, cut once") or the results will be catastrophic in either the aesthetics or physics or both.

Very cool! I recall one of my favorite classes in high school (many years ago), was learning how

to make a bowl on a lathe. Your work is seriously beautiful! I love the colors and shapes. Beautiful craftsmanship.

beautiful!

I especially like the pen with the different color curves. It is amazing.
