Gettin' the hell outta Dodge!

ya gotta love this thread!

But a "donation" of $9 a month is not in my realm of possibility. Sorry, it seems excessive. I think selling ads makes more sense.

Yep, new URL. It should work for awhile since there will be a redirect, but...

...since the domain finerkitchens.com is for sale, when it gets purchased, then the owner will no doubt remove the redirect. Best to just create a new bookmark and delete the old one.

Donations...

Hi orchid.) A website requires a domain name and web hosting, just to get started, about $300/year. That is the bare minimum that this site needs to keep running. If we want to add improvements (and we do) we need money to pay programmers who typically charge between $50 to $150/hour. So we would like to make money so that improvements can be made down the line. Stuff like fixing the 31-post bug, fixing the problem with archiving, being able to upload photos, etc. Also the owner has a family to support...

No one is required to subscribe and in fact I don't (and I'm sure Paul doesn't) expect everyone, as you say, to donate. Typically people don't donate and that's why advertising is so prevalent on websites.

I am donating my time right now and am not getting paid for this.

Yeah I think we're going to have to go that route.

But don't worry, I DO want to keep it as unobtrusive as possible while still being effective. My goal is to make this place BETTER, NOT scare everyone away! lol

Would you guys prefer to be able to select your own amount?

If so, I'll pass on that info to the Powers that Be.

I certainly understand the economics...and like your idea of individual donations vs. required. I

am usually pretty silent on all of this stuff, but I would really suggest that we do not do the "gold membership", "silver membership" premium membership" etc.....

I know we have a special group and do not want to see a hierarchy based on contributions....Times are tough for everyone, but I am confident that we can make it work.....

Thanks for the support guys.)

FWIW I have to admit that this is a REALLY spur-of-the moment thing that came about because by some miracle I found myself with about 3 days of nothing to do. We'll see what I'm able to come up with in that amount of time! lol

Very helpful Mimi. That gives me a better idea of the cost and I can

appreciate wanting to make it better. I remember looking at the new site that was being developed and wasn't to excited about it really. I'm not on Face book or anything like that so a lot of that site just wasn't for me. I just want to ask for help about a cooking problem or post a recipe that I have tried and thought maybe someone else might like too. I would love to get a subscription to Southern Living but just can't now so $9 a month wouldn't be possible for me. We all cook here. I don't think any of us mind some advertising as long as it's not the obnoxiousness that goes on at the "other place". Seems like we would be a good place that some products might want to advertise on. No one should have to work for free and I understand something needs to be done. I'm afraid I'm not making a bit of sense but we all appreciate you and everything you have done. Thank you Mimi.

I trust you completely Mimi. You have the same sensitivities we do. I love this place...

...and I place a great deal of value upon what I take from here. I try to contribute what content I can, but I know I take waaaaaaay more than I give.

My business is definitely "feast or famine". What I tend to do when I am "feasting" financially, is to catch up on my favorite causes and get my donations up to date. Even though this place is not associated with a charity, I would most likely make a sizable contribution when that time comes. It's worth it to me!

Michael
