Going to stay with people in Canada - what 1 little TJs thing would you take?

So, Ive been asking my friends around here. No one can come up with food items. Maybe

TJs is the best bet but something really unique and wonderful.

Sorry

Of course, there`s always Old Bay Tartar Sauce.

Marg, if someone were coming from California to visit you, what would *you* like to receive? smileys/smile.gif

I live in Canada - and while in the States I purchased

some salad dressings to bring home. I seem to recall there was an orange, poppyseed dressing that was good.

ah, you're right Pat. Even though it's dried, they are sticklers for that.

Trying to bring in a piece of cheese will practically get you a life sentence without parole!

another idea: baking chocolate. We have Ghiradelli but

not Valrhona - at least not where I live. Also we usually bring back See's chocolates when we go. Fresh dates?

Betty

Dried is ok, in certain amounts

Fruits and vegetables, including herbs: dried
-up to 15 packages per person
-but not more than 250 kilograms

Herbs, spices, tea, coffee, condiments
-entry permittedBaked goods and candies up to 20 kilogramsAnd I always love the ones that seem to make no sense, but I guess they have their reasons...

NO fresh meat (unless you have wild game and a hunting license...figure that one out...)
NO sand
NO wooden souvenirs with bark

See's! Hadn't thought of that, either. Dates? Another good one - you're all terrific smileys/smile.gif

That`s what I`m struggling with. In the west there is all the CA stuff here. Yes, Old Bay

tartar sauce is my favourite. Very dilly. Not available anywhere in Canada and in this area, fish is on the menu regularly.

Chocolate...well, Callebaut is Canadian and Callebaut shops abound here. Is Vall different

Posole would be good if it were for me. It is difficult to find and I love it. I think going for the TJs or other`s prepared products would be the best bet. And no problem with customs if they are jarred.

I looked on the TJ site but I don`t really know what to look for in unusual jarred sauces. Are there some real specials there

We get Ace crisps of all kinds of excellent varieties here. Ace bread is outstanding and every few months the variety of crisps increases. And Rainforest is made here.

I think I`d do better suggesting what to take back with you. Sorry I`m such a loss.

When I was in the east, I used to be such a US shopper. The difference is that in the east, people tend to winter in the Caribbean and don`t get so accustomed to Mex food. So the market is not perceived to be there. But in the west, people go to AZ, Mexico, Hawaii so the market is huge here.

Been thinking about what I shopped for when I went to CA. It was always the really

neat things that are so unique to Major US cities such as NY and LA. Things that are available in few stores but that seem to be de rigeur in LA.

E.g.

I bought a Christmas deep pile door rug with a stylized cat who had tangled up in a string of Christmas lights. It was precious, not cutesy but just really smart.

I bought a couple of unusual and again, very smart and unique cat placemats (for the cat).

Odd candle holders and napkins.

But again, they just are not available in other cities.

Sorry again, still no food.

sand and bark can harbor bugs (and/or their eggs) and other pests

that Canada may not have nor want. Not sure about the fresh meat reason though. smileys/wink.gif

Good to know, thanks Marg. We may be tapping you for the ideas

of items to bring *back* from Canada on our next trip there. smileys/smile.gif
