Got to use CUReward points by Dec 31. Is a 325W Kitchenaide worth it?

For a few years now, I've fantasized about what my Kitchenaide mixer would be...(my fantasy life is very small lately. Helmut Newton has been replaced by Lowes and Sur la Table.) I made a promise to my 30-year old MixMaster that as long as it could keep cranking along, I'd hold off on buying the lust of my life.

When researching (done when the MixMaster was sleeping in his cabinet), the wattage was ALWAYS over 300..usually in the 450 range.

But now I've got to use these darn credit card points by Dec 31 and they have a 5 quart, 325W model. It would basically be free except for S&H.

Should I go for it? Or wait for Mr. MixMaster to die and buy the 450W? I'm worried that if I get this one, I won't want to spend "real" money for the 450W.

I plan on using it for heavy doughs, like bread...and cookies...and cupcakes...and genoises...(contented sigh just now) Will a 325W be sufficient?

My advice is to wait and buy the 450W later, Marilyn- it is based on (more)

...my many years of using KA mixers for different things. I burned up my latest model which was a 325W by using it for not only kneading breads but for making sausage with both the meat grinder and sausage stuffer attachments. We made 50 lbs of sausage and the machine just finally couldn't handle it. I have used KA since I was a small kid using my Mom's and recommend you get the higher wattage when you can so you don't suffer the same problems. I expect to be able to use a KA any way I want to- kneading, mixing thick batters, making pasta dough, whatever I want- and the only way to guarantee this is to get the more powerful one, I think.

I wouldn't trade my 450wt one for anything!

I still love and use my Sunbeam Mixmaster (newer 1988 model) but the two don't compare. It's nice to have both. Maybe you can find someone who would like the Mix Master Mixer that you could give them a good deal on then buy the KA with money you put with it?

Ladies...as always, your advice is invaluable. Mr. MixMaster...

gets to remain the powerhorse in the kitchen.
Gayle, very clever idea about selling it to add to the Kitchenaide fund. Cathy, I had forgotten, but sausage is definitely on the to-do list, so that tidbit helped my decision as well.

Muchos gracios, amigas.

Have had the small KA for decades.Do sausage, some bread

but I prefer to hand knead bread. For free, it would be a nice appliance.

Marilyn, they had the Professional 475W KA at Sam's last night

for $240! That's a GREAT price!! They only have the heavy grey/silver model but it's quite stunning.

I thought of you when I saw it! smileys/smile.gif
