Great read: Niman Ranch Founder Challenges New Owners

Interesting. Ranching is a difficult business.

It's hard to turn a profit, even without being principled about it. My grandfather was a rancher, and I don't think he ever made much money at it (although he was a pretty small operation).

Marilyn, did you ever read Margaret Fox's 1st edition of Breakfast Food? It's more edgy and

comes through with her no-nonsense approach of "telling it how it is." They re-issued it and included more photos and took out a lot of the language. I have booth books and I can't seem to part with either one. But I really appreciate her approach in the first book. It's got some insights that as a consumer you'd never see or hear about.

Dont' know which version I have...it's a hardbound, yellow cloth cover. Doesn't

look like the cover on Amazon. I got the book years ago...it was one of the reasons Lar and I spent a Thanksgiving weekend in Medicino one year. But it also turns out that THEY DON'T SERVE BREAKFAST IN THE WINTER!!!!

I had my entire menu already picked out. Did they not realize that we had flown all the way from FLORIDA and had driven HOURS in the dark from San Fran to reach Mendicino so I could be there for BREAKFAST!

Geez...didn't realize I was holding onto residual frustration until all those exclamation points came out of me. I still make my homefries using her method: butter and bacon grease and potatoes = Heaven on Earth. And on Sunday, I converted two more folks to the Glory and Wonderment of warm Cafe Beaujolais coffee cake.

We did have dinner there a few nights and that was wonderful, but I'm a "breakfast all day" kind of gal and forced to admit to being a MG (Margaret Groupie) after devouring both books.

Absolutely Love Mendocino. George and I were there with another couple many yrs ago.

We had such a special time. I wish I could remember the name of the hotel/B&B. They sent us Holiday cards for years....

Such a wonderful place with fond memories!

They really excelled at Customer Service. I recall going for a short walk/hike and returning to our room with fresh lemonaide waiting.

Went out to peruse the local shops, to return to fresh tea/bisuits. We went to dinner at night, to return to not only the bed being done and chocolate, but also a beautiful fire in the fireplace. (It was like they were stalking us...knew our every move, and tried to anticipate what we would need (or didn't need) next...) Really special place....

Fun going down memory lane!~

Edited to add: Found it...Stanford Inn by the Sea....

I'm with you. I adore that coffee cake and love breakfast all day....

Can't wait until my life settles down enough to cook again. I've been going through my books lately and am shocked to see how many cookbooks I have--specifically breakfast-based books.

M--reminds me of that "National Lampoon Vacation"--they went all the way to CA only to find that..

the park was closed. Then he punched the moose.

That part of California is so amazing, that with a trip through Napa Valley, a week in San Francisco

cost as much as a trip to Asia and parts of Europe, but so worth it!
Oh my, back to work to feed the travel monster--
Nan
