Leftovers today--I celebrated over the weekend. Saturday night we had dinner at a local spot I had
heard about here in Long Beach--the AT LAST CAFE. Really good homey food at good prices (it was featured on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. See link). The lights were too bright and the music was too loud but the food was excellent. We had a seared polenta and portobello mushroom appetizer that was top-notch, and my boned half-chicken cooked under a brick was done perfectly.
On Sunday we drove down to San Diego to visit (crash) the Hotel Del Coronado and have lunch on the terrace. That's the old resort where they filmed "Some Like it Hot." The restaurant has gotten more expensive since we've been there last! But the teensy $12 Grand Marnier Mojitos were to pay for the view, normally the garden with the ocean behind, but this time there was an ice skating rink set up--kind of surreal surrounded by palm trees with the beach in the distance.
I had a "Crab Cake BLT" a good crab cake on a brioche bun with bacon, lettuce, tomato, avocado and tartar sauce. Very nice. Jacques had oysters from British Columbia which he thought were wonderful--quite a compliment from a Parisian.
He bought me Nadia G's Bit-chin Kitchen cookbook which I think was a hint to make her turkey leg and butter bean cassoulet again, so that's what I'm making tonight. Easy Peasy.
Thanks again everyone for your good wishes!!!
