Has anyone else had trouble getting onto the site today? I've been having trouble on and off.

No problem-I'll send a check out tomorrow. And thanks for all your help in keeping this site running!

been checking the net

did some traces from various geographic regions and found network problems at several of them in reaching our network. So I am investigating further and have a trouble ticket with both our server admin and our data center. I also see issues on OpenDNS now so it is definitely a big problem. To be clear though, the server has never been down. There is some problem on the network end (such as a dns record, bad router etc).

denial of service attack

I found the problem. DNS provider has been getting hammered with a DDoS (distributed denial of service attack) the past couple of days. This is causing problems for eat.at and from my understanding about half million other sites (domains and subdomains), that rely upon this provider either directly or for backup DNS. So thus the sporadic network connections for some users.

There is not a lot I can do since our server and our local DNS servers are working perfectly fine. I am going to setup a domain alias to see if this will help for the users who have ongoing problems. I'll update this thread when that is done with instructions on how to use it.

domain aliases

I setup a couple using different TLDs just in case.

So if you start having trouble accessing eat.at you can use these instead:

http://www.eatdotat.com
http://eat.cc

These domains act as aliases so it is the exact same site just a different address/name. In fact I am posting this message from eat.cc

You may have to login separately though if you change to one of the aliases. Not to say setup a second account but just that if you are logged into eat.at and instead go to eatdotat.com or eat.cc, then you may have to login separately because your browser will recognize them as different sites even though they essentially are not.

Bottom line if you have access problems, give one of them a try. They use a different method of DNS so this should help resolve some network problems.

Wanted to make one point and that is all of the things I said previously about ISPs that don't update their DNS still apply. So since I just created these domain aliases, if you ISP is not on the ball the aliases won't resolve until the have updated their DNS. If you use OpenDNS then you are golden. Those ISPs that ARE on the ball typically will have things updating continually but in some cases I have seen major providers a month+ behind but more frequently you will sometimes see 24-48 hour delays.

it's on the bottom of every page...

I guess I figured it might be not be bon goût to make a post about it but I should have...

nice thought, bad idea

here's why: Although most ads today are paid to publishers based upon the number of clicks they receive from "unique" IP addresses, it is against the rules of most ad networks for a publisher to solicit clicks from the users of their site so I won't go there.

And actually any single users clicking multiple times on ads or with a regularity that can be perceived as automated, can get a site blacklisted by advertisers/networks so good intentions could have negative results.

The ad networks want natural clicks from site users i.e. you see an ad that looks like something of interest to you and you click through to see what it is about and they are pretty good about identifying clicks that are generated purely for the purpose of generating money for the publisher. Consider how huge my "big brother" Google is and that most of their revenue comes from ads on sites like this and you can get an idea of how much effort and money they invest in this process.

But regardless of any of that I would not encourage this since if I was an advertiser paying for an ad, I wouldn't want to just pay for clicks that were not from people genuinely interested in whatever I was advertising.
If anyone has a business or works for an organization that could benefit from being a sponsor of this site, I'd very open to doing some promotion for them via links, ads or other options.

you know how it is when you are familiar with a page-don't notice somthing new unless it stands out

Paul,I just sent you a reply from my email address today. I trust you will receive it. Everything's
