Has anyone finalized their Thanksgiving menu? I need some inspiration....TIA

funny, I was looking in T&T Menues for some ideas, and there are no t-day menus. Maybe if we get

some good menus posted here on this post, we could link to this in T&T Menus. I have picky eaters coming, so the menu will be more simple than I like. Ina Garten's Pan Fried Onion Dip and a cheese ball with crackers and cut veggies for apps. I'll be adding a small ham since the neighbors are frying the turkey. stuffing balls, mashed yukon golds, small sweet potato casserole with crunch topping, plain old corn, green beans with browned butter and almonds(oooh fancy) no knead yeast rolls, real cranberry sauce(oooh fancy again)and maybe glazed carrots but that may put them in shock, apple crumb pie and pumpkin pie. I baked a double batch of my Sugar Softies cookies(in T&T) last night and will decorate with icing and autumn sprinkles tonight and freeze for next week. always good to have some cookies to munch on. and I like Gewurztraminer wine with turkey.

I have and it's very traditional, no surprises here...

With all the different expectations and preferences, I stopped "going wild" several years back (oh for the days of the all Japanese Thanksgiving, or the Grilled Ducks with Cilantro Honey Lime glazing...sigh). Plus, with things in such upheaval, people want comfort food. Here it is, the no-frills comfort food Thanksgiving Menu 2008 that we'll be having at my house:

Corn Chowder
Beef and Noodles (very old family tradition)
Roast Butler County Turkey
Cornbread Dressing
Russian Potato Casserole
Scalloped Oysters
Succotash
Green Beans
Turkey Pan Gravy
Seven-Layer Salad
Fresh Fruit Salad
Cranberry Relish
Grandma's Thanksgiving Cake
Marinated Apple Pie
Maple Ginger Fudge Dessert TBA

Nobody ever eats sweet potatoes except for me, so I'm 86-ing them this year. I eat them nearly every week anyway, so no big whoop. Family will contribute 3 more sides and salads TBA.

Boring, but it's what they want.

How about sharing recipes on a few of those items?

Marinated Apple Pie - that has my attention. I've got to know what it is. And Grandma's Thanksgiving Cake has me curious also.

We always have a very typical menu.

Turkey (of course)
Mashed potatoes (with butter and whipping cream)
Sage stuffing
Gravy!!!
Boiled onions (blech--this is from my husband's side of the family)
Mashed blue hubbard squash
Green beans
Cranberries
Rolls
Pumpkin pie
Pennsylvania Dutch Apple Pie
Pumpkin Spice Cake with Caramel Glaze (for me--I'm not a pie fan)

I think I'm forgetting a couple of dishes because in our family, the men do all the cooking on Thanksgiving. (Of course, that means I have to help with dishes--I'd far rather cook!)

From time to time I've tried to introduce a new dish, but I'm the only one who ever eats it because everyone really just wants the traditional dishes. So I gave up on that.

A work in progress. Here's the latest email consensus, We and our best friends are collaborating

Belgian endive spears with sweet and sour vinaigrette

Richard, Did you try this? I originally posted and was going to try it and never got around to it

Amanda, I've noticed the same thing about "new" dishes to the traditional Tday menu! Frustrating!

How did you all get the men to take the cooking for this holiday? I think it's fabulous!

Game hens, squash-and-potato mash, green beans and almonds, and pumpkin pie....

It's pretty simple because it's just the two of us, this year.

Although I'm still tempted to go to a Lebanese place for their reputedly out-of-this-world turkey and Middle Eastern sides. smileys/smile.gif

Pretty traditional here too, no one likes the "new stuff"

Seems to be a common theme........

pre-dinner snacks
butternut squash bruschetta
hot onion dip
crab dip/crackers
domaine chandon spread
cheese puffs
spinach balls

brined turkey
gravy
stuffing
mashed potatoes
string beans caesar
spinach gratin (ina garten)
mixed vegetable gratin
mashed turnips
sweet potatoes/apples
carrots/pecan topping
corn
pumpkin and celery root dice
Brussels sprouts/pancetta
cranberry mold

biscuits
cranberry butter

pumpkin pie:
apple pie:
coconut custard pie:
Starbucks crnaberry bars

fruit
nuts

This is ours, Pretty much the same year after year....

Smoked turkey
Stuffing - my traditional-bread, cornbread, walnuts, currants, onion/celery/fennel, herbs and butter
Turkey gravy (very important!)
Anne's cranberry relish
Sour cream mashed potatoes
Oven roasted fresh green beans
Sweet potato casserole (the marshmallow thing)
Parker-house rolls or Angel biscuits
Veggies with Hatch Chile dip
Somebody brings a salad
Pumpkin pie
Mince Pie
Tiny pecan tarts

I like the idea someone talked about on the morning shows of each person bringing his own plate. Then, before departing, he can gather leftovers on that plate (you gotta wash your own first!) to take home! Great idea! No more looking for empty Cool Whip containers to fill.
