Have green bell peppers lost their taste? For years now, I haven't been able to find

green peppers with any taste whatsoever. Ever since I left NYC in 1998, all the green peppers I've tried (in FL and NC), have been utterly tasteless. I've tried them from several sources, from CA to locally grown. How about you? Can you find good-tasting, pungent green peppers in your area? Or do you grow your own?

Supermarket ones, yes definitely. Locally grown ones from farmers markets can still taste

good. But that goes for most things. I so rarely buy any produce from the supermarket now -- sure, everything is available 12 months a year, but it's all so ... bland.

But, the problem is, I did buy locally grown ones from a farmer's market, and they had no taste!

Have you tried heirloon seeds. I think they bred out some of the bitterness..

Let me try rephrasing that in English. I believe green peppers have been bred to a blander, more generic (ie: acceptable) taste. Heirloom seeds might get you back to the taste you recall.

Of course, remember that soil components contribute to the overall taste, so be sure to include whatever chemical waste was rampant during whatever time period you enjoyed peppers.

Meryl, our homegrown and great - but...

I did notice that when I lived in So CA that the veggies I tried to grow never tasted like the home-grown from Missouri. It has to be the soil. At least that's my thought.

Remember folks that your soil at home needs to be ammended every year prior to planting

I add organic composting material, and whatever the nursery suggests every year. I till in March and add the organic products in at that time. In April, it is ready to receive my plants and seeds.

Sure, Meryl! I'll probably have some in July.

We grow hot peppers, too. Want those as well? smileys/smile.gif

Interesting, the ones my mom raised were small and had thin walls. They were very

pungent. I've noticed that many of the peppers I buy have very thick walls and it seems to me the thicker the wall the less flavor. Anyone else notice that? As always, change isn't always a good thing.

I think walls is the right word. Your brain is fine. "Thin-walled flesh" might be the most proper.

Re:All the home grown peppers around here (Missouri)seem to be thin

walled, smaller and darker in color, even the red ones. They definitely have a different taste. I guess the term "terroir" could apply.

OMG - are you serious?!!! I would love some homegrown peppers! That would be so great! Thank you!!!
