Have you ever noticed that people really love the things that you and I might think simple?

if you have the itch to knit again, Cancer centers welcome knit/crocheted hats. tis the season!

I have such fond memories of mom making all my clothes...

about this time of year we'd be hard at work on a Halloween costume. The trips to the fabric store to look at patterns and the fabric, gosh I loved designing my own clothes. She did my sister's prom dress and everything.

Mom and my sister have the sewing gene. I was never that good at it, but can do some basic stuff. Still have mom's sewing machine though.

I knit, embroider and crewel (crewel, crewel world!) and cook, of course, fond memories of my mom

and grandma making clothes. The clothes my mom made were great, but grandma's ideas for kids clothes were in the line of polyester pant suits in red and blue check with sprigged cherries on them! Grandma did give me an American Girl doll and she sewed an entire wardrobe of clothes for the doll and my grandpa made a wardrobe trunk with little hangers and a shelf inside. Grandma saved tiny boxes from Avon and other places to put the wardrobe items. All of the clothes were from scraps from her wardrobe and the things she made for mom. She would look at fashion magazines and then recreate what she saw for my mom, mom had a stellar figure, tall, slim and blonde as cornsilk. I loved watching her get fitted and getting dressed up to go out. Miss those days for sure. My granny taught me to knit and crochet and embroider although I'm not much into crochet.

I'd like to can more but my stove is so crappy, I need an induction burner or something to get the canning pot to boil properly, it takes too long and spoils the texture of the jams and pickles etc.

I blog about the knitting etc on my other site but haven't been up to doing much. I haven't been too sick to knit since I started doing it again. Still not cooking much but this weekend I'm going to make minestrone.

You're right...I lunch at my friends (she's French) and the lunch portion is appetizer size!

Of course, she is skinny-skinny. Our portion sizes are HUGE compared to most of the world. We go for quantity rather than quality. When I'm up in Canada, I notice they eat much smaller portions and are all about healthy, organic, home-grown, simply-prepared. Again, quality over quantity.

One of the big reasons is all the sugar that US producers stuff into every...

conceivable product. Even deli meats! You can't escape the sugar if you buy this crap.

Had friends visiting the US from London and they were trying to buy cold cuts to make sandwiches. They were amazed at all of the sugar in everything they bought. When you're not used to eating sweet coldcuts, it's quite noticeable when you try this processed stuff.

I now live in Ottawa, Ontario.....in Canada. We used to live in Montreal.

I think, too, it's a generational thing. We always had a sit down family dinner in the dining room. Ian and I still eat dinner at the dining room table.
