Have you evern been charged a cake fee (like a corkage fee)? Rose Levy Berenbaum was charged $25!

Gave us 'house desserts'

off the menu. But it was so disappointing.

If I remember correctly the whole evening was kinda disastrous - it took nearly an hour to get our appetizers, etc. And this from one of Ann Arbor's oldest and finest restaurants.

I do believe that they ended up comping most of dinner.

Our family still talks about the evening...everything that could go wrong went wrong.

A freind asked me once to bring the birthday dessert to a restaurant...

And frankly I was shocked. I'd never heard of bringing food to a restaurant, after all they are in the business of supplying this so the idea never occured to me. I didn't think it would be allowed. So I called ahead of time to ask and was suprised they said ok.

I made a huge batch of cupcakes and not only did we eat them, the owner loved them/took some home, and so did most of the other patrons. We all had a great time, but I'd never do it without coodinating ahead of time with the restaurant and wouldn't be suprised to pay a cake fee, though I think $25 is over the top.

If restaurants had decent tasting cakes (or desserts), we wouldn't think of doing it...

But all my friends know I bake and ask me to bring a little something when we celebrate a birthday. Usually it's one cupcake apiece and we always ask (and share) with the wait-person.

I have never heard of bringing your own food to a restaurant before.

It would be interesting to ask a couple of restaurants how they would react if a group of guests brought their own cake or dessert. My bet is that they would say no as I doubt they would be allowed to serve anything not made in the kitchen in the restuarant - not even to the people who brought the cake - because of FDA-regulations for restaurant kitchens.
