Help! I just found out I'm going to England to deliver our application!

Mar, check your messages....

There is so much to see and do....what I forgot to mention is as well as a Britpass suggested by Sandy...when you land at the airport you can go to the ticket office and get a weeks tube and bus pass. Talk to them and ask for the best deal...some are very short and unhelpfully bursque (they deff got out the wrong side of bed)
If this has proven to be a good idea you can then get another weeks pass...

London is of course wondermous, but if at all possible, get out of the city...

take the train to Windsor (eat traditional English dinner at Nell Gwynne's with a proper pudding afterwards). Take the train further out to Oxford. Sigh in contentment at this absolutely enchanted little college town. Have a pint at the Eagle and the Child (the Bird and the Brat to the locals) where J.R.R. Tolkien used to hang.

Bath
Stonehenge
The Cotswolds!!!!!

Back in London, wander around Covent Garden. Eat amazing Chinese food (Szechwan Eel with green peppers was my particular favorite). The Cabinet War Rooms in Whitehall, (it's in the St. James Park end of H.R.H Treasury just northwest of Parliament Square), is where the British governement moved during the blitz. They walked out after the war, sealed it up,and forgot it for a couple decades. It is fascinating. All of the equipment, furniture, maps, etc. was just left there. Churchills's suite of rooms where he lived, slept, etc. Fascinating place. You truly feel as if you've been transported back to 1940.

Marilyn, that will be so wonderful!

We stay at the Mitre House Hotel - they presently have a special discount of GBP10 per night if you book on-line in advance. It isn't fancy, but we never had a problem there. They are friendly and helpful, even getting us a van as a taxi to get to the airport with all our luggage last time (the girls refused to share a suitcase!). We really liked it because we could get a family suite at a reasonable price. There's also a supermarket a few blocks away if urgent supplies are needed (like real chocolate). If you're interested, try the link.

Wish I could imagine we'll be able to go again. It doesn't seem likely for ages. smileys/frown.gif Eat some chocolate for me!

The Big Wheel, Victoria and Albert Museum, Paddington Station to visit

statue of Paddington, King's Cross Station for Platform 9 1/2 (look at St Pancras Station, both in Harry Potter), side trip to Brighton, etc, etc, etc. Bon Voyage

Marilyn, I have good friends in London. Shoot me an e-mail and I'll connect you.

My friend Fiona used to be the market manager for a farmers market and she's a hard core food lover. Not sure if she'll have time to meet, but she'll definitely be able to give you some good tips!

All great suggestions, EXCEPT...

Patisserie Valerie - trust me, I worked in the kitchen of one of them, the chocolate is so blended with "stuff" by the time it gets to your pastry it's barely chocolate...!

The omelets, however, are very nice, but not worth it in my opinion...

Book The Fat Duck today....

You won't want to miss it - it's a day trip on a train and the most mind-blowing food you will have pretty much in the world -

you'll have to be flexible, they're booked months in advance, but ot's well worth the trip...
