Honey cake disaster.

You know how you feel when your spouse has been really great, as in REALLY great, and you want to surprise him/her with a cake?

That was me last night. Better Half had been absolutely wonderful, so therefore I decided to bake a cake. Honey cake. It's one of the house hold favourite cakes!

The list of ingredients for this cake is pretty long, so one needs to pay attention.

Well, that didn't stop my mom from calling me in the midst of it. She is kinda upset that we - Better Half and me - are not going to have a wedding reception (read: dinner!) and I told her that it's just how we feel about our wedding. Anyways, I got off track during her conversation so by the time I put the cake in the oven, I suddenly realized that I had forgotten to put in 4 ts cinnamon.

I was about to skip the cinnamon, when I thought, "Hey, I just put the cake in the oven. There might still be time to mix in the extra spice".

I turned off the oven, I left the cake in the oven to spare the extra work of lifting it out (sigh!), put on the pilot light (it's dark in there), blended inn the cinnamon and closed the oven.

I had set the timer for 45 minutes, but when I checked the cake after 45 minutes, it was not nearly done. Actually, not even close.

I cursed the oven, turned up the heat (450F), looked hard at it (- that CAN work sometimes) and suddenly realized that I never put the oven back on after I turned it off for the cinnamon. The pilot light was still on, but the heat from it is not nearly enough to bake a cake.

I cursed again, turned the oven back on, set the timer for 45 minutes - of course forgetting about turning up the temperature by now.

When I went to check on the cake after 45 minutes I accidentily opened the oven door before checking the glass window first - and the kitchen was intantly filled with smoke. Black smoke!

The fire alarm went off, the dog hates the fire alarm and went bananas, Better Half opened the front door and back door and went running around with a newspaper to "chase" out the smoke. Yeah, that works! (Not really, but opening the doors late at night do let the flies in!)

The cake?

It was charcoal! And yes, the cake DOES look exactly like it does in this picture.

Today I went to the store and bought doughnuts.

Better Half is happy - and so is the dog!

The house still reeks of burned honey cake, tho......

Oh, dear. Well, at least you got a good story out of it. I burned a cake this week, too.

I made banana bread, put the cake in, put the timer on, and went to do something, virtuously staying downstairs so that I'd hear the timer. DH came home, and we were chatting about paint colors for the downstairs when the oven timer went off. I sort of heard it, but didn't really think about what it was. Fifteen minutes later my brain kicked in.

"Did the oven timer go off?" I asked my husband.
"Yeah," he said, surprised. "I thought you heard it."
"But I was still *sitting* here," I said, dashing to the kitchen. "Why didn't you SAY something?"
I pulled out the cake--the top was a deep, deep unforgiving brown. "You know my brain is mush these days."
"I'm sorry," he said. "Next time I'll try to remind you that the timer has gone off."

The inside was edible--but only just. I think it's the timer's fault--the timer on my previous oven kept going until you turned it off. This one just beeps for about 30 seconds and then stops.

Oh poor Eva! You "looked hard at it" - teehee, yes, that would help - lol!

It does look like it would've been a nice one - very, er.... pretty. ;o)

If it makes you feel any better, it might be a blessing in disguise...

If the cake was in the oven with just the pilot light on for any amount of time, the eggs may have spoiled and you would've ended up with food poisoning if it had cooked okay afterwards. I often wonder about things like that underbaking for a while and spoiling.

Here's what you need Amanda. When we have a party it's usually out by the pool and I will put

something in the oven, go back out and get caught up in conversation and forget about my appetizer. So several years ago someone here posted a link to this timer and I fell in love. OK, that's a little dramatic but it sure has made me happy. My guests always get a kick out of it and my appetizers come out great.

Oh Marilyn, I cannot imagine loosing that one! I love Belgium chocolate and cherries

do you have the recipe? smileys/wink.gif

Never thought of it that way, Dawn. Thank goodness we didn't taste it.

Well, there wasn't much to taste, to be honest....*LOL*
