WICKED STORM . . .
Unbelievable in Chicago. Last night was crazy with severe thundersnow!
Up at 3 am to find a drift against my porch back door to the height of my shoulder. Out the front to drifts up to my waist. My N-S street is pretty secluded, but the wind nearly knocked me over. To get to the bus (a two+ block walk) would have been into 40-50 mph winds. Our office is/was open, but we were warned SAFETY FIRST (the office will be open on Saturday for those of you have to make the time up), so by 4 am I emailed my colleagues and said I would be working from home today.
It's still snowing . . . I think we're up to over 20" by now and the temperature is dropping quickly. By tomorrow morning we should be -15 to -10 degrees, with no let up on the wind, so wind chills ~-20 degrees.
Lake Shore Drive was shut down at 8 pm last night with over 1,000 cars stranded between Belmont and North Avenue until early this morning. Thankfully, only on fatality so far.
I've lived through two of the previous top five winter events and this was nothing like anything I've ever seen. I couldn't even stand on my back porch last night, and my back porch is on an enclosed courtyard. Unbelievable.
