How can I schedule making all this food??

Since I've set my hair on fire TWICE with our grill, I don't think of it as a cooking

instrument so much as an Implement of Torture.

Thank you. I feel MUCH calmer right now.

With all the overtime and travel I worked during the past two years, I haven't invited anyone over for dinner--the house was too messy, I was too tired, the moon was in the wrong cycle, the stars were out of alignment, etc. It was simply easier to meet up with friends at restaurants, because, you know, their staff aren't cranky.

So my kitchen timing skills are pretty rusty. Possibly even barnacle-encrusted.

Thank you again for lending an ethernet-hand in my kitchen.

How special is that!? Must put a smile on your face everytime you look at it. Sounds like mom was

an organized, structured and financially wise. And enjoyed cooking!

Table name tags will be 7" undecorated gingerbread houses...

I found at Walmarts. They're preassembled, but undecorated with candy/icing provided.

I bought one for each guest and also asked them to bring some form of candy for decoration because you can never have too much candy. I've bought even more and will place bowls down the center of the table and have a big batch of Royal icing ready to go because nothing says comraderie like getting...well, sticky all-over.

I figured it will keep them preoccupied while I'm hyperventilating in the kitchen.

Each guest will then take home his/her creation.

The big secret is that Thanksgiving dinner is one of the easiest to prepare

Because the dishes are all so "forgiving" that exact timing is not so critical. The turkey rests, the sides just need to be hot, the gravy is done, the desserts are made ahead. Ah, a glass of wine, a bit of chit chat with the guests before carving (and I always con someone else into carving because I hate it), you may find you will really enjoy Thanksgiving dinner this year. Piece of cake.....er....pie.

Cathy, I so much agree with you! Also, the meal HAS to be the same dishes. In other words, you

have the traditional staples, in our family it is the mashed pots, sweet pots, etc.... You can't suddenly decide to make chili or lasagne or joe'e cassoulet. : )

The family "expects" what was served for years and years. I do add some new things; change it up a bit, but the theme is always the same.

I remember one of my closest friends recalling when she hosted for the first time, that her brother made a comment that she did not serve their mom's bean casserole (The one with campbell soup / onions....) The funny thing is that my friends brother owned and was the head chef of a restaurant at the time! Funny how food evokes such fun memories!

So true- that darned green bean casserole has to show up in this house too

I'm not making it for Thanksgiving but it will show up for Christmas. At least I have been able to wean my Husband off jello molds (traditional was lemon jello with applesauce and melted cinnamon candies in a mold) for holidays. But I cannot get him off the green bean casserole. I've made it from scratch, done it a dozen different ways but what he loves is the mushroom soup, canned Frenched green beans, Velveeta version with canned fried onions on top. Sigh. You can take the boy out of Iowa.......

The Pandora turkey method is done on a Weber as explained in the instructions, using coal briquettes

Of you are going to do it on a gas grill you will need to get the instructions that came with your grill. Or follow what the grill instructions say on your turkey for weight/time.

Yowza! Please take photos. I can't believe you're making all that food +

gingerbread houses for 8 people!

Einstein's definition of insanity "Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different

results." Not that I'm accusing you of insanity but if the wig fits . . .

Cathy, I was just saying that...

I'm underway tonight and I was plotting out my schedule and I said "this is not a hard dinner". So true. BTW, after comments and suggestion, big change in my menu now includes Roast Turkey, Mashed potatoes, cornbread dressing, scalloped oysters, praline yams, all the traditional dishes. I wasn't going to get away with my plan. Ha. But I do have a few curve balls in store (just added key lime pie.)
