How much pork do I need for Gretchen's pulled pork?

I am going to have (at latest count), 17 adults and 13 kids over for dinner. I have never cooked the pork for so many...how much should I get? Also, what cut do you recommend? I generally do the Pork Butt Roast but will do something else if you all think it would taste better.

is this only entree and how many sides? Will you have buns to make sandwiches?

I usually use pork butt, but have also used shoulder and like the taste with either.

For thirty (my usual crew at work) I use three roasts, about 5# each. I put buns out, a lot of the guys like it served that way with coleslaw on the sandwich.

These are mostly guys and have a couple of big appetites. The is also another entree.

if a number of the kids are teenage boys they could make a dent in it! if there are tiny ones that could balance it out.

Also, is it served buffet style over a period of time?

am thinking 15#, raw would be plenty and leftovers are excellent.

I usually have a good amount left over which gets frozen for part of a later lunch,

It is the only entree and there will be only a couple of sides although..

...lots of appetizers. I was planning on coleslaw and buns as well.

The kids are all tiny....average age is 4.5 so little ones.

Buffet but not "over a period of time."

I guess I will go with 15 lbs and we will try freezing the leftovers.

I always do more and freeze it.....

It's so easy to do and then I put in sandwich bags in individual portions and then put those in a heavy freezer ba. Pull it out a serving at a time and it does beautifully. DH was upset the othe day when I ran out of frozen so I am going to do some on Christmas Eve day while getting everything else ready. I do moisten it with a little juice and/or vinegar sauce.

I'm thinking about trying Richard's version this time.

 
Two good-sized Boston butts should be enough.....

I make 5-6 oz piles on large buns for adults, so one butt roast for the adults sandwich. The other roast will work for the kids and some of those guys who think two sandwiches are better than one!

 
after reading the kids are little guys,was thinking that also.It freezes great, but depends on space

 
Butts I get are boneless,about 5# each. I think 12-15# total would be fine, will have leftovers!

 
I buy bone-in if that is what is on sale. This week, that's 67 cents per pound!

I bought 7-lb to 8-pound roasts--the bone accounts for about 6 ounces. Still plenty for leftovers.
