I finally found a small bamboo steamer that I wanted, and the best part

dawnnys

Well-known member
is that it was only $1.50 at a yard sale and it's never been used.

Now, what to cook in it?! What vegetables and other foods would you recommend me starting with?! I've always wanted one, never got around to buying one before. Happy day!!

Can you fit a plate inside the steamer?

There should be an inch of space beyond the plate. If so, you can steam lovely fish or chicken on a plate. One of my favorite fast spa-like dinners is a piece of fish with pesto, or TJ's cilantro pecan sauce on top. For chicken you can cube it up and marinate it with the usual soy ginger combination, then steam it. Delicious and fat free cooking!

Whatever you do, don't let it be a whole fish whose eyes will bulge out at you as

you lift the lid...because somehow in the time it took to steam it, you managed to forgot that it would look back at you, even though you made a special trip to Reading Terminal market to buy a fresh fish (eyes and all) with all the accoutrements for the recipe. Apparently you were naively expecting something less eyeball-ish with all the other good things like fresh lemongrass and lemon slices and garlic and ginger root to distract you.

No. All I saw--and all I ever see in my Cinemacolor memory--are those dead bulging cataract'd eyeballs staring blankly up at me.

And that, as they say, was the end of my culinary initiation phase into Oriental steaming recipes.

My bamboo steamer has since been relegated as a costume jewelry hold-all.

You almost need to listen to the director voice over. He talks about all these

amazing location shots from all over the world. Nice visuals. There is a scene that looks like an animated M.C. Escher painting.

Movie is kindof weird, a little choppy, but I liked it...two story lines running together...one is a young girl in a hospital being told a fairy tale by a paralyzed man...the second is the fantasy made up by the paralyzed patient, with characters based on people in/around the hospital.

The little kid was good...her first movie. In one scene, she's frightened and an older patient tells her to say "Googly! Googly!" to scare off the bad things. Sweet scene, but then later on, in the fantasy portion, there are all these evil black-coated soldiers getting ready to attack the hero at his wedding...and the vocal choir is singing in the background...deep tenors, like Russian Orthodox priests, singing "googly-googly!"

I loved the trailer...movie wasn't cut as perfectly.

What a great trailer! I love the storybook look and the costumes, wow.

So do you use Netflix? I'm wondering if I should try it, now my rental list is really long and I've just been using Comcast's ondemand thingy...

Used to use Netflix...reached a point where they just sat there unwatched. At work

we have a video club....opens once a week for 45 minutes during lunchtime. The club rents out video for 3/$5 (Blu Rays are 2/$5) for an entire week. With the profits from the rentals, they buy new videos every week (most come out on a Tuesday, so we have the latest videos by Thursday.)

Or our public library gets all videos and TV series as well, so that's free. However, they can only be kept out for 3 days. Then it's a $1 a day late charge.
