Finally found a local farmer to get fresh raw milk from and it is absolutely heavenly!!!!! Since the Dairy Industrial Complex has paid our legislators to pass laws to preserve their monopoly, the small farmers are no longer allowed to sell their milk in most states. However, creative minds have come up with the herd share plan whereby people who want unadulterated milk and cream buy a part of a cow and pay a monthly "room and board" fee. So far, they haven't managed to pass laws making it illegal to drink milk from your own cow. But give them time, I'm sure they're working on it.

If anyone has been considering a herdshare program, you won't regret it. The milk is amazing.

the Jersey's give the best milk! when I was getting mine, the gallon jar would have about

1 1/2 - 2" of cream on top.... bliss! I get fresh, raw goat's milk but it's naturally homogenized so no cream on top, just pure, rich milk.

enjoy your cow smileys/smile.gif

Lucky you! With the price of milk these days I think it is almost cheaper to buy a cow>>>

and the milk tastes so much better. One of my fonest memories growing up is spending time on a dairy farm. The cows were milked and it all went into giant vats that were very cold. The milk from these vats was the best thing I have tasted - icy cold, and oh so creamy.

That is a cool idea - I've been trying to figure out how to get raw milk

so I may go to a couple of the farmers and see if they will try this with me.

Hey Richard, I'm curious to know...how does the financial structure of this work?

Do you pay a lump sum and then monthly for board, or what? I'd love to own part of a cow! I'm just curious how your agreement is set up.

info

I signed a sales contract for my share of the cow. For the monthly board I just wrote a check out for the entire year so that I didn't have to worry about it. Also, this farmer has a "buy back" at cost if I ever want to sell my share of the cow.

Awesome! And how much output of milk do they anticipate? How often do you

pick up your supply?

this varies according to your needs

since there is just two of us, we didn't want a lot of milk, so our share gets 1 gallon of milk every other week. You can buy as much as you want and get 1 gal week, 2 gal week, etc. I can always buy more shares if I want more milk. The other share partners have formed a distribution system where we take turns picking up. One person goes to the farm to pick up the milk and then meets everyone at a local mall parking lot to distribute. That way, I only have to drive out to the farm a couple times/year.

That's very cool. There was/is a similar herdshare here in Ontario but

the provincial government, aghast at the idea of anyone drinking filthy, festering unpasteurized milk, has taken the farmer to court. Slow Food Canada is very involved in his defence.

One step forward, ten steps back. Enjoy your milk!

Yes, same with the unfortunate case of importing cheese, most of which is unpast'd.

I whimper every time I face a vast wall of endless luxuries which are the cheeses of France, contemplating how many I'd love to pack into my suitcase and knowing that I can't.

So I just loosen my belt and eat them there.

Marg, you need to get on Andy Shay's mailing list

He runs Shay Cheese, a mail-order outfit. His December selection includes three Quebec raw-milk cheeses (Riopelle, Pont Couvert, and a Cheddar) and one from Burgundy (Tour du Charolais). $85 buys enough cheese for 6 to 8 people, and of course it usually keeps a while.

The selections vary each month but you can always count on several raw milks. They're in Pefferlaw (don't ask me) and ship all over.

you've probably seen my rants on KA

but Whirpool bought them out and is seriously degrading the quality of KA products so they can turn a cheaper buck. They're counting on people still remembering that KA stood for quality as they continually subtract the quality. Once people catch on, they'll cast it off on to the dust heap and cannibalize another good company with a good reputation.

I saw an engineer's description of what they were doing to the KA mixer's gearbox housing: replacing the metal housing with a plastic one that overheats, expands, and spews the gears like dropping an old fashioned manual wind-up alarm clock onto concrete from 10 feet up.

And just think of the money they'll save as they're counting on people thinking they're buying the time-tested KA mixer. Not!

Does anyone have the Bosch mixer? I am starting to look into a mixer too

and that name had popped up as a viable alternative.
